The Will to Change
The Will to Change: Men, Masculinity, and Love | bell hooks
8 posts | 14 read | 12 to read
With the courage, honesty, and compassion that have made her one of America's most provocative authorities on modern culture, bell hooks takes on the interior lives of men and answers their most intimate questions about love. Everyone needs to love and be loved -- even men. In this groundbreaking book, bell hooks gets to the heart of the matter and shows men how to express the emotions that are a fundamental part of who they are -- whatever their age, ethnicity, or cultural persuasion. Written in response to the author's in-depth discussions with men who were inspired by her trilogy, All About Love, Salvation, and Communion, bell hooks's The Will to Change addresses maleness and masculinity in new and challenging ways. With trademark candor and fierce intelligence, hooks answers the most common concerns of men, such as fear of intimacy and loss of their patriarchal place in society. She believes men can find the way to spiritual unity by getting back in touch with the emotionally open part of themselves. Only through this liberation will they lay claim to the rich and rewarding inner lives that have historically been the exclusive province of women. Men can access these feelings by giving themselves permission to be vulnerable. As they grow more comfortable and start believing that it's okay to feel, to need, and to desire, they will thrive as equal partners in their intimate relationships. Whether they are straight or gay, black or white, The Will to Change helps men to reclaim the best part of themselves.

Too many men view “feminism” as a bad word and something to fear. This book does a great job of explaining patriarchy and how it affects everyone AND what men need to do to help break these destructive systems down.

My final completed read of the year! This was my first complete bell hooks book; I had read many passages from her works in my gender and sexuality courses. This has become one of my all-time fave books. It‘s so important to talk about the relation of men to feminism and patriarchy. Many works I have read focus on only a limited population of women when talking about feminism. This is profound and truly a must-read!!!

Chilling with my little bud in our very coordinated color scheme. It‘s rare for Huey to want to sit on my lap and convenient that he decided to do so on a day where he almost matched my clothes. #huey #catsoflitsy

Advocating for males through feminism is high key my heart. This is the first book I‘ve seen so just that.

This book 📖 took me awhile and I may not agree with everything said, but I think reading it was worth it for this paragraph alone. The YouTube channel PopCulture Detective recommended it for me. Now, let‘s destroy the patriarchy 🔥!

I wanted to like this book, I really did. But couldn't get past the author denouncing the patriarchal, white supremacist and war-mongering ways of Harry Potter.

BookishMarginalia Oh no, bell. Oh no, not Harry. You do not mess with JK. 8y
Beholderess @BookishMarginalia I'm all for feminist criticism, and there can be a lot to say about the portrayal of women in the series, but to claim that it teaches boys supremacy and violence? That's just weird. 8y
BookishMarginalia @Beholderess I agree with you on all counts. 8y
