I‘ve finished my week one book for #14books14weeks2021 She of the Mountains is short but the author manages to do so much—intertwining stories of love, gender, sexuality, and mythology. I listened to the audiobook which was narrated by the author, but I‘d like to check out the illustrations in the print copy.💚

Caterina @rockpools Thank you, Rachel! 😊 I'm doing CPE this summer, which is a hospital chaplaincy internship, so I'll be very busy but not reading for school. And I have a long commute (2.5 hrs/day), which will be perfect for audiobooks! 🥰 My brain is excited for a break from seminary reading. 😂 4y

This book is gorgeous. Not a straight myth or fiction book but both intertwined. It took me a minute to get into the flow of it all. But the language kept me wanting to read

This book alternates between a very personal story and a retelling of Hindu mythology. I was excited to find out that Vivek Shraya is from Edmonton, Alberta (Canada). It's rare for me to read books that reference places near where I grew up. Raymond Biesinger illustrated the book. I love the simplicity and symbolic elements of his work. I now follow both Shraya and Biesinger on Instagram and look forward to seeing more of their work.

Beautifully combines two narratives- a reimagination of several different Hindu mythological stories, and a contemporary story of a queer man's journey of his personal identity. The writing is lyrical, the illustrations are gorgeous, and the emotions are raw. You can't miss out on this one.

BookishFeminist @Laalaleighh Two spirit is a term often used by Native or Indigenous people to describe those who spiritually identify with multiple sexualities or genders. I use it specifically bc it's not interchangeable with trans, queer, or LGBT since it's a spiritual/ceremonial role & doesn't conform w our mainstream gender/sexuality norms, & not all Natives identify as a POC. BookishFeminist @Notafraidofwords Yes of course! Trans and nonbinary people can be asexual. I have no idea if any of these particular books discuss asexuality or aromantic preferences but I would love to know if they do. I'm curious & may do another list at some point. You're right though, it doesn't get talked about hardly at ALL. I identify somewhere on the scale myself (too new to me to know where I fall) so it's important to me to find good resources. 8y

Notafraidofwords @BookishFeminist yeah totally. I have thought many times about it, but just mostly b/c I feel like I relate. Everyone says humans are sexual beings and I never necessarily felt that way. So, it would be cool to learn more about it. 8y

It's been a *huge* stressor in my life tbh and it wasn't until this past year that I actually learned what asexuality is and basically went "oh shit." ? I def want to learn more & use my platform to get the word out there. 8y

Sue @BookishFeminist @Notafraidofwords Me too re asexuality. I've always known I'm on the LGBT+ spectrum somewhere but haven't been sure where. My daughter identifies very strongly as asexual, so I've learned a lot more through her. Also @BookishFeminist have you considered making these into a Goodreads list? 8y

BookishFeminist @Sue I'm so glad I'm not the only one, I have a feeling it's a lot more common than people let on but society is so damn big on sex that we're pressured into it (even though it's literally traumatized me). I've been this way since ppl had crushes in grade school & I felt weird for not & was pressured into going with the flow to earn popularity points. I hadn't considered Goodreads but will now! I put it on Twitter earlier which I think you saw? (edited) 8y

BookishFeminist @Sue Worth noting you can still have romantic inclinations if you're asexual but also can be aromantic so you can still want marriage if you're asexual. :) (There's lots of stuff out there if you're curious and unfamiliar.) And will do! It's definitely going on my blog at minimum just may be a while since I've been in a big writing slump. If it goes on Goodreads it'll likely be under Litsy Feminist Book Club's GR group. 😊 (edited) 8y
