so-soHamdouchi wrote the first police procedurals in Arabic to be translated to English, set in Morocco. While it was interesting and a new setting, the story had too many pieces and no resolution. A few side plots were unrealistic (the neighbor) or sexist and ridiculous (Fifi).
panI was all set to give this a solid 3 stars and then it ended. Just ended. Where's the rest of the novel? Just because you have the (probable) answer doesn't mean you're done with the crime novel. This is supposed to be a police procedural. I can't say more without risking spoilers but I'm so mad right now. This qualifies for yesterday's #photoadaynov16 #threwitacrosstheroom Seriously, it's like they forgot to print the rest of the book.
Since joining Litsy, I've become more cognizant of the (lack of) diversity on my bookshelves. Before Litsy, I honestly didn't pay attention to anything about the author. Here are a couple of the #diversereads I've picked up in the last month trying to expand my reading - POC, more works in translation, and settings outside of the US/Western Europe. pickI like this story because it's a place I know very little about Tangiers in Morocco, the main character the lead detective is interesting and different. At only 136 pages it's hard to build mystery, though it was different enough to keep me reading and I loved Fifi the dancer
