Waiting to Exhale | Terry McMillan
From the critically acclaimed author of A Day Late and a Dollar Short and The Interruption of Everything, a wise, earthy story of a friendship between four African American women who lean on each other while "waiting to exhale": waiting for that man who will take their breath away.

I‘ve seen this meme in several places, and it makes me laugh every time. This cat is giving me serious Angela Bassett vibes from Waiting to Exhale, except that the #tree is not on fire. #divinedecember

Mehso-so

This book came out in the early nineties and it has not aged well. Man crazy women, smoking, homophobia, fat shaming, and so on. It did have some funny bits, so it gets a so-so for that. I'm sure at the time it was fresh and honest. But now it just seems so dated IMO. I kept waiting for some big female empowering moment, but it never really came.

Not only is this story my favorite, but the movie version is definitely my favorite as well. This story even gave me inspiration to future writing masterpieces, yet there will only be one woman that the story will follow. Terry McMillan is truly an amazing author. Her female protagonists are just like women in real life. I could relate to Bernadine even at the age of seventeen. This wonderful book made it to my Recommended Reading List.

#ReadSoulLit - Single Ladies: So many parts of this book are solidified in my mind because of the movie adaptation. I think that I was just as excited to read Bernadine Harris get her retribution as I was to see Angela Basset give that A+ performance on the big screen. This is a story about sisterhood between four African American women whose friendship buoys and sustains them through the trials and tribulations of dating relationships.👇🏽

Nute The beauty of this story is the evolution of each woman as she realizes that she is dynamic and intelligent as a female in her own entity...she is ENOUGH in her single definition before she gives of herself to someone else. 5y
Scochrane26 My friends & I used to watch this movie in college all the time. I enjoyed the book, too. 5y
Kammbia1 I've read this one years ago well before the movie came out. I enjoyed much better than I thought I would. I have been meaning to read another McMillian novel. This is a reminder to do it! 5y

Nute @Scochrane26 It‘s definitely a Friday-night-chill-out-with-your-girlfriends kind of movie!😄 5y
Nute @Kammbia1 This book was big for Terry McMillan. For awhile she was the voice of black women in different relationship scenarios making a stand for themselves and going for what they wanted. 5y
Nute @Kammbia1 I like her older books: Mama and 5y
Reggie I‘ve only read How Stella Got Her Groove Back way back in the day but I do remember Stella is reading this book on the beach and not liking it. I thought Terry was cool if she could make fun of herself like that. I should read another one by her. 5y
Scochrane26 The soundtrack is great, too. This post reminded me of it. 5y

This story of the deep bonds of friendship between four African-American women shows how important that acceptance and support can be. Each of these women has her own issues, both personal and romantic, but evolves throughout the course of the story to find the love she deserves. Bonus, the movie is great, too.
