This story is about a young big and his father visiting the Vietnam War Memorial in Washington D.C. The illustrations are gorgeous. The story itself is a little sad, but can be helpful for young children who have lost a family member.

The Vietnam War Memorial is such a beautiful place and I think it would be a great for children to read about especially when talking about the DC area and what is in it.

The Wall by Eve Bunting and illustrated by Ronald Holler (RF and RA) is a great story that tells about a son and grandson of a veteran who was killed in the Vietnam War. They go pay their respects at the wall, and it is very heart-warming. It can be used to connect to other subjects, such as history, and it encompasses UDL Principles 3.1: Activate or supply background knowledge and 9.2: Facilitate personal coping skills and strategies.#LAE3414sp19

gnewman As for ESOL Strategies, a teacher could incorporate 49: Give students pre-lexicon assignments when introducing new topics and 13: Use preview/review activities. In addition, a great reference comes from scholastic, and it outlines American symbols over a two day period. Mmw2478 I‘m so glad you read this book. I loved it too and plan on using it in my classroom. 6y
ha_kaye I am a sucker for books that integrate history into the content! Your UDL is perfect because students need to understand the time period to fully comprehend the text (: 6y
DrSpalding I am thrilled you read this book and I am hoping that Michelle exposed you to this and you decided to read it. This makes me happy! 6y

The Wall by Eve Bunting is a RF book about a father who takes his son to Washington DC to find the boys grandfathers name listed in the wall. Great RA book for Veteran‘s Day or Memorial Day and a good time to teach young children to honor our soldiers and country. UDL‘s 2.1, 2.4, and 3.1 clarify vocabulary, promote understanding across languages, activate or supply background knowledge would be satisfied with this book.

Mmw2478 ESOL Standards 1,2, and 4, Teach questioning for clarification, promote small group cooperation, and link lesson topic to students‘ prior knowledge would be satisfied with this book. #LAE3414sp19 6y
DrSpalding I know you initially shared that you were skeptical about these particular books but this happens to be one of my favorites. What a poignant story that is truly part of so many Americans‘ history. Great book for social studies instruction along with literacy. 6y

This is a really cute historical fiction book, that would be good for a guided read with a student. This story is about a father and son who visit the wall (of people lost in the Vietnam war) to find the boys grandfather‘s name. It is explaining the significance of the wall and the names on them to the boy. Has a lot of great information for students who don‘t know much about this monument. #ucflae3414sp18

Kendallc This book is good for guided reading so would be nice to have multiple copies and read with a group setting and teacher helping the students. The link is a step by step how you can write letters to veterans as a class after reading this story http://www.educationworld.com/a_lesson/03/lp313-03.shtml 7y

#ucflae3414f17 The Wall by Eve Bunting tells a sweet but sad short story of a little boy who visits the Vietnam War memorial with his father, where his grandfather who passed is honored. The boy ponders about the war and what life would have been like if his grandfather didn't die in combat. This HF book could be great as an IR or as a RA right before Veterans Day. The UDL strategy I would use is 3.1; activate or supply background knowledge.

Juliemorell The ESOL strategy I would use is #1; Teach questioning for clarification. https://www.teachervision.com/wall-literature-guide-teachers This link has some excellent ideas for teaching his book including having a veteran as a guest speaker, and a research activity about different US symbols. 7y
