Daughters of the Witching Hill
Daughters of the Witching Hill | Mary Sharratt
7 posts | 13 read | 31 to read
Daughters of theWitching Hill brings history to life in a vivid and wrenching account of a family sustained by love as they try to survive the hysteria of a witch-hunt. Bess Southerns, an impoverished widow living in Pendle Forest, is haunted by visions and gains a reputation as a cunning woman. Drawing on the Catholic folk magic of her youth, Bess heals the sick and foretells the future. As she ages, she instructs her granddaughter, Alizon, in her craft, as well as her best friend, who ultimately turns to dark magic. When a peddler suffers a stroke after exchanging harsh words with Alizon, a local magistrate, eager to make his name as a witch finder, plays neighbors and family members against one another until suspicion and paranoia reach frenzied heights. Sharratt interweaves well-researched historical details of the 1612 Pendle witch-hunt with a beautifully imagined story of strong women, family, and betrayal. Daughters of the Witching Hill is a powerful novel of intrigue and revelation. This e-book includes a sample chapter of ILLUMINATIONS.

Based on historical documentation of the Pendle Witch Trials, the Author uses a little poetic licence (explained in Afterword) to bring the characters to life. The heartbreaking unfairness of forced beliefs and the hierarchy of class weighs heavy. The writing is poetic, flowing and a pleasure to absorb. I really appreciated the Afterword which explains more about the people the characters were based on as recorded in the trial documentation.

#AllHallowsRead #scaryread that deserves more recognition. Books about witchcraft & the Salem witch trials fascinate me but I knew little about the 1612 Pendle Witch Trials in Lancashire, England before reading this book a few years ago. Excellent blend of historical detail with fictional family drama. The scariest moments come from what happens to people accused of witchcraft for practicing their faith & folk healing. A good #spookyoctober read.

wen4blu I have this one sitting in my TBR pile! 8y

I-read-and-eat Just about to put up a post with a dreadful book about the same trials. I will keep this book in mind to redeem the trials 😉 Awful book is 8y

A fictionalized account of real events, this story gives voice to two women accused of witchcraft in Lancashire, England during the reign of James I. It's captivating!
