All I Did Was Ask
All I Did Was Ask: Conversations with Writers, Actors, Musicians, and Artists | Terry Gross
"I'm Terry Gross and this is Fresh Air . . ." Now available in paperback--a selection of revealing interviews from the award-winning National Public Radio show Originating from WHYY-FM in Philadelphia and heard on more than 450 NPR stations, Fresh Air with Terry Gross has become a daily habit with millions of listeners nationwide--a must for anyone hoping to keep up with what's happening in the arts. Over the last twenty years, Terry's guests have included our most significant writers, actors, musicians, comics, and visual artists. For her first collection, Terry has chosen more than three dozen timeless interviews that prove to be as lively on the page as they were on the radio. Her questions--probing yet sensitive--encourage revelations from figures as diverse as John Updike, Isabella Rossellini, Conan OBrien, Samuel L. Jackson, Johnny Cash, and Nicolas Cage. And in her introduction, the generally self-effacing host of Fresh Air does something she wouldnt dream of doing on the air--she reveals a thing or two about herself.

Terry Gross‘ #Talented & relaxing voice helps on a day like today. I‘m caught in the vices of #rheumatoid and #fibro Too much fun this past weekend. Podcasts, such as Fresh Air, help distract me when I can‘t hold a book open. #SeasonsReadings2017 @RealLifeReading

Hoopiefoot Hang in there. Terry‘s voice makes me feel better too. She sounds confident, like “Don‘t worry, I‘ve got this” & that makes me feel like at least someone has things under control 😀 7y
cobwebmoth Gentle hugs! 7y

Pickpick

Wonderful interviews. I learned that Michael Caine's father thought Michael was gay because he ate chicken - real men ate red meat and chicken was sissy food. Mickey Spillane never frequented bars - "it's a place where people go when they don't want to go home." Mario Puzo's parents were illiterate and not proud of his writing. "My mother regarded my library card with the same horror that present-day mothers view their sons' heroin needles."

MrBook Amazing! 8y
Eridau Wow! I'm gonna have to get this one. Very interesting. 8y

JanuarieTimewalker13 I'm not sure I get this quote, something about it makes me weary. Like, are people only at their creative best while trying to seduce someone? Hmmm, food for thought. (edited) 8y
Sue That seems depressing! 8y
Suet624 @JanuarieTimewalker13 A couple of thoughts: this quote is part of a longer discussion on his style of writing sex scenes. It was considered quite explicit at the time and was being criticized. I think he's saying (this was my take on it anyway) that for many, in 1960, sex provided a passion/poetry not easy to come by otherwise. 8y

JanuarieTimewalker13 Ok, now that's fascinating. Yes, in the time period context, it's right on, I believe! Excellent, thank you! 8y
JanuarieTimewalker13 @Sue yes, that was my initial reaction also! 8y
Suet624 @Sue, I wrote more about the context of the quote in my comments ... hope that helps. 8y
Suet624 @JanuarieTimewalker13 Phew, glad I could clear that up. 8y
JanuarieTimewalker13 Sincerely, maybe the highest form of creativity is the method we use to propagate the species...hahahahahaha... that sounds so dystopian and so weirdly true. Omg, I better start flirting, too bad I won't be propagating anything, though...hahahahahaha...I'm so good with that. 8y
Suet624 @JanuarieTimewalker13 that's exactly how I feel. At least it was for me. 😂😂😻 8y
JanuarieTimewalker13 Note to self: never Litsy before coffee...certain things just blow my mind and I go off on crazy tangents. Hahaha...I'm happy you posted this! It's got me thinking. Thank you!! Off to caffeinate...apparently not a word, but that's ok...☕️ 8y

This happened in 2003. O'Reilly then launched into a tirade against Terry Gross, accusing her of "throwing every kind of defamation you can in my face." An early playbook for Fox News and Trump apparently.

TobeyTheScavengerMonk I NEED this book! Terry was my companion on my drive home from work for years. 8y
Izai.Amorim "Secular editorial position" !!!! What's wrong with that? What else should it be? 8y
