A bittersweet coming-of-age debut novel set in the Korean community in Toronto in the 1980s. This haunting coming-of-age story, told through the eyes of a rebellious young girl, vividly captures the struggles of families caught between two cultures in the 1980s. Family secrets, a lost sister, forbidden loves, domestic assaultsMary discovers as she grows up that life is much more complicated than she had ever imagined. Her secret passion for her English teacher is filled with problems and with the arrival of a promising Korean suitor, Joon-Ho, events escalate in ways that she could never have imagined, catching the entire family in a web of deceit and violence. A unique and imaginative debut novel, Kays Lucky Coin Variety evocatively portrays the life of a young Korean Canadian girl who will not give up on her dreams or her family.

It's a really good book about racism and brings so much awareness into discrimination due to race and gender. Definitely read this. Does have some mature content tho ( 13+)

Heard Ann Y. K. Choi read a passage from her book 'Kay's Lucky Coin Variety' at #wotsTO2016 today! Even more excited to read it now. Also scored this sweet tote bag featuring Daniel Rotsztain's illustrations of all of Toronto's Carnegie libraries! An all-around success!

I liked Mary a lot -- she was clearheaded and passionate and yet she always seemed like a young woman grappling with her identity. I'm sure I'll re-read this one someday. Recommended.

It's got "lucky" in the title and that's a good enough reason to use this touching novel for my free middle square. Just have to read something someone hated and I will have my first line!

Godmotherx5 If you need suggestions, I hated "A Confederacy of Dunces". I think I'm in the minority since most people loved it. Perhaps you'll like it?! 9y
Lindy Thanks for the suggestion @Godmotherx5. There's been a lot of hate for "The Vegetarian" on Litsy and my hold has come in at the library so I've got that one in mind. 9y

Poignant coming of age, balancing traditional expectations of immigrant parents, long hours working in family's convenience store in dicey Toronto neighbourhood, and desire to assert independent identity. Well done. #diversebooks

"They used to force us to wear white," my mother had once told me. All peasant Koreans were required by law to wear white during the Japanese colonization.
