This was a highly entertaining character study/war story that takes place in the First Law world. It includes many fun characters of the original First Law trilogy. Taking place over just a few days, it show‘s different viewpoints on both sides of the battle. It also includes the author‘s trademark Grimdark lovable rogues. Also similar to the previous novels, there isn‘t much plot.⬇️

Well back for another serving of grimdark fantasy. I rated this a read because I admire Abercrombie's ability to tell a well fashioned consistent story. Pity the story is so dark. Another story in his first law universe and telling the tale of the lead up to, fighting and resolution of a battle.

Armour is part of a state of mind in which you admit the possibility of being hit.

All you can do is take each day as it comes. Try and do the best you can with what you‘re given. You won‘t always do the right thing, but you can try. And you can try to do the right thing next time. That, and stay alive.
