An odd book in plot and tone. Walter lives his life rationally, but on a work trip things go queer and the novel embarks on a series of coincidences and improbable events that disrupt his stasis. Although he is narrating, I felt disconnected from Walter. He never seems real; there is a flatness there. Though captivated by the descriptions of the jungle and European sunsets, I never settled into this book, was never sure what I was reading.

Day 2 of my culinary - literary world tour is the US.
Ranch Breakfast from New Mexico for Cormac McCarthy. Lunch was an Amish Potato Salad from Pennsylvania, where The Killer Angels is set. Dinner was a Succotash from the American Natives for Homo Faber. 🇺🇸

My father called me to tell me there‘s “Dead Poets Society” and “Homo Faber” on TV tonight. 😱 What to choose❓ I routed for “Homo Faber” since I have seen “Dead Poets Society” more often.

Oh, I still like the film/book loads – even if, now that I grew in personality, especially the last third of the film arises questions in me … 🤷🏽‍♀️ I feel for Faber, even if he behaved like an a**h**le but I understand Hannah perfectly. She‘s so right‼️

The first time I have read this book was in school and I always remembered that I loved it and after 20 years I see that I still feel the same. I love that it still feels relevant... some of the technology topics that he wrote about could be an op-ed piece today. It's interesting to see how sober and stern Faber lives his life and manages his relationships and how all of this starts to unraveled with on coincidence after the other.

When you think it will take you no time to read this slim book and then you discover the font size. But it's worth it... this is a re-read for me. I read this in school a long long time ago.

Eine tragische Geschichte nimmt ihren unglücklichen Lauf und ein ganz und gar pragmatischer Mensch muss sich selbst reflektieren. Das gelegentlich zynische und abgeklärte Weltbild von Faber gefiel mir sehr.
