Lacey Acosta's mother died when she was three. Growing up in a Victorian mansion in the middle of the woods with her cold, distant father, she explored the dark hallways of the estate with her cousin, Margaret. They're inseparable--a family. When her aunt Penelope, the only mother she's ever known, tragically disappears while walking in the woods surrounding their estate, Lacey finds herself devastated and alone. Margaret has been spending a lot of time in the attic. She claims she can hear her dead mother's voice whispering from the walls. Emotionally shut out by her father, Lacey watches helplessly as her cousin's sanity slowly unravels. But when she begins hearing voices herself, Lacey finds herself confronting an ancient and deadly legacy that has marked the women in her family for generations.

January Reviews

This YA horror has been on my TBR a while. I picked it up for January‘s #ReadSpooky2023 prompt. I thought it was a traditional haunted house story, but there was a twist I didn‘t see coming. It‘s a pick for me, but a low one. It‘s not a long book and I feel that the story could have been fleshed (ha!) out more. I will pick up Lukavics‘ other books. #haunted #Booked2023 #TitleStartsWithVorW

(2016) Lucy lives with her father and aunt in a historic mansion, where the family's livelihood consists of hosting rich-people parties. Then the cook dies, the aunt disappears, and Lucy's cousin starts hearing voices in the walls ...

It's a YA haunted house story with an ambiguous setting: clues about the story's location in space and time are so mixed that I expected it to end as Just A Dream. But it has its moments, and the ending delivers

A kind of haunted house story with a twist. Good enough that I kept reading it because I wanted to know what happens, and I would recommend it to anyone who loves a haunted house story but it‘s by no means a masterpiece. You never quite forget that you‘re reading a YA novel. #ReadSpooky2022

A lot of great spooky imagery and atmosphere! I always enjoy a horror that starts out with a slow burn and then goes explosively off the rails.

There were things about the setting that didn't make any sense, though. Maybe it should have been set in a different time period.

Overall good for it's YA horror genre, not quite for me, but still fun.

An entertaining pick for #readspooky2022, looking forward to the rest of the year! 👻 @teebe

TW - self harm/suicide

I am giving this a pick because:
1 - the opening line “Walter the cook killed himself in his little bedroom downstairs, just a few hours after saying good-night.“
2- I read it in one day because I wanted to know what was going on

My only issues are listed in comments with a spoiler alert -

This is January book for #ReadSpooky2022 hosted by @teebe - looking forward to each months pick!

Make a great day everyone - ⭐

bthegood Issues with the book:
1. the time period felt off - at times the atmosphere seemed to be early 1900s, but it is not set in that time period( a computer in the library that they use) -
2. the ending was disappointing - at some point I figured it out, but that wasn't the issue - it was how it was delivered - it would have been better as a slow, methodical reveal, bits of it thrown into the story along the way - rather it felt like a data dump
3y
bthegood Issues with book continued:
3. some of the reactions and choices of the teens were ridiculous from an adult perspective (although as it is a YA book, and it reads like one, so #3 would probably not be a YAs issue)
(edited) 3y
j9brown Agreed on all counts. It had it's issues, especially the sense of time period. Like, these girls had the internet, they never used it to talk to anyone at all? I had a good time anyway, I thought the reveal of her dad's demise was a genuinely shocking moment! 3y

Literally read this in one sitting. Such a fantastic book and totally had so many elements that I love in it! I always love grand manors in books and this did not disappoint. I wanted a bit more history of certain elements, but that is just me being persnickety. Definitely going to look into other books by this author! Highly recommend this one!

JoScho Sounds good! Stacking. Is it set in modern day? 6y
sparrowssavvy @JoScho Yes, although they leave it slightly ambiguous which I really enjoyed. 6y

Trigger warning for self harm!

This book gave me major Sinister vibes, which I loved! I had a hard time putting it down because I just had to find out what was really going on. Super creepy and, at times, gruesome. I'll definitely be picking up her other book, Daughters Unto Devils.

BookishGamer87 @BookHoarder32 It really was! Quite a few "No thank you!" moments lol. 7y

Well that was scary. I was very happy to drop this off at the library. I couldn‘t stop reading it even though it was gross and scary. Usually YA horror isn‘t that bad! And yes I am a wuss, deal with it.

super creepy and completely addicting, i read this in about 5 hours today and was hooked.

not as much as i would've liked to have been. only 4 stars. but that just because of the lack of descriptions. I LOVED the plot. this book was perfect for fans of horror.

First post on here and I'm feeling the Election Eve tension! So what am I doing? Snuggling with a cat and reading a horror novel! I greatly enjoyed DAUGHTERS UNTO DEVILS by Amy Lukavics, and this is her newest foray into horror. At least this is a horror story I know isn't real. We shall see how tomorrow goes...

This was just ok. It wasn't scary and the characters weren't that good. It took too long to get to the real story. It was so weird to first describe this elegant diner where people come dressed in their finest and then the food is corn or hamburgers. That was so strange. Also I think the house in the cover of the book doesn't match with the describtion in the book. These are only details but when there are enough of these it gets really anoying.

Strange, gruesome things are happening in this "sacred" house. Things become even stranger when the walls begin talking. A quick, spooky read.

Although this kept me reading and was imaginatively gruesome in places, the ending disappointed me so much that I am now exasperated with the whole book. The characters were also rather flat.

I really wanted this to be good but it just fell flat for me. It had some really spooky scenes but overall was kind of bland. However, I am excited to see what Lukavics writes next!

kswartz I felt the same. I was giving it the benefit of the doubt up until the end, hoping there would be some sort of brilliant and triumphant payoff, but no. 8y

Visited a bookstore today. My order had arrived. Women in the walls looks like a perfect book for a dark and cold autumn before the winter arrives. The other book was an interesting find. It is a collection of stories of mistakes done by famous and historical people and the consequences that followed.

Somewhere between Pan and So-so... I really enjoyed the first half- very creepy and atmospheric. The second half got progressively more absurd until a rushed ending that was just grotesque. It was almost like two completely different books.
