I could've taken or left this story. Some backstory is necessary the more you write about a character, but for some characters it's overkill. At this point of the series, we haven't even MET Alex yet, so I found the story confusing & superfluous. Later on I may be thankful for the history of Alex's change, depending on how he's introduced.
