Eleven-year-old Quinn has had some bad experiences lately. She was caught cheating in school, and then one day, her little sister Emma disappeared while walking home from school. She never returned. When Quinn's best friend Kara has to move away, she goes on one last trip with Kara and her family. They stop over at the first hotel they see, a Victorian inn that instantly gives Quinn the creeps, and she begins to notice strange things happening around them. When Kara's parents and then brother disappear without a trace, the girls are stranded in a hotel full of strange guests, hallways that twist back in on themselves, and a particularly nasty surprise lurking beneath the floorboards. Will the girls be able to solve the mystery of what happened to Kara's family before it's too late?

I couldn‘t resist the cover of this book when I saw it on display at the library. It‘s meant to be a read more for pre-teens and teens but I still enjoyed it. It‘s mysterious and smartly written with many twists and turns that will keep your pulse racing. I read it in one day and my 12 year old daughter took a week but we both loved it. The author touches on some hard subjects, life, death, choices, and consequences in a thoughtful manner.

I really enjoyed reading this one. I think adults will cotton on to what's happening fairly quickly, but the author does a great job of writing a book that's eerie rather than scary for a young age group. It's fairly short at just over 200 pages, but I think a longer book would have started to meander a little, whereas this kept my attention all the way through. Definitely recommended. 4🌟

Quinn and Kara are best friends. But with the news of Kara‘s family moving they do one last thing together- take a road trip! Accompanied by Karas family, they embark on their last adventure across the country. After a long day of traveling they stop at an inn for a break.

MackenzieS All seems well until strange things continue to happen, a strange man is following their every move, Kara‘s family goes missing one by one, and they keep seeing Quinns dead sister. Now Quinn and Kara have to find their way out of the inn before they lose each other. 4y
MackenzieS If you like books that have a mystery plot but are still easy to follow, this is a book for you. A motif in this book is the friendship bracelet Quinn and Kara wear. This is an important motif because the bracelet is the only thing that is keeping them together even though they know they are going to lose each other.

MissYaremcio Very nice Mackenzie! The bracelet looks to be more of a symbol than a motif, so I will give you 1/2 on the motif section! Is it quite creepy? 5/6 4y

Read this one yesterday, think I‘d give it a 4. Though the ending made me sad, middle grade shouldn‘t make me sad darnit. Also this is another that had a pretty spine.

#WitchyReads Day 30: From Fats‘ review: “The Inn Between was an Amazon Best Book of the Month Editor‘s Choice Pick. It‘s a haunting story that brings to mind Stephen King‘s The Shining because of the setting. It‘s a quick read for anyone who likes to scare themselves silly.” - seems like it has that #Omen vibe to it. Her full review: https://wp.me/pDlzr-j9O

Hmm. I have mixed feelings. This is very readable and creepy, but the author relied on some literary/mythological allusions that I don‘t think kids would get. Other answers to the central mystery were heavily implied but again, not clearly enough for #middlegrade. It all turns out to be much darker than you‘d think, but the babyish illustrations don‘t match that tone at all. Overall, a compelling book that‘s confused about its audience. #kidlit

"Hellooo, is anybody home?"

This MG novel about a lost little sister and an eerie Victorian Inn in the middle of the desert has setting going for it...but that's about it. The writing is so-so at best - lots of pronoun confusion and some purple prose.

The conclusion is an overdone trope (maybe not in MG lit, but certainly elsewhere).

I didn't dig it.

I really enjoyed this book. Interesting story, decent writing. Would have liked more character development but still a very enjoyable quick read.
