Falling Angel
Falling Angel: A Novel | William Hjortsberg
7 posts | 9 read | 13 to read
Hjortsbergs Edgar Awardnominated classic about the hunt for a vanished singer that leads a detective into the depths of the occult Big-band frontman Johnny Favorite was singing for the troops when a Luftwaffe fighter squadron strafed the bandstand, killing the crowd and leaving the singer near death. The army returned him to a private hospital in upstate New York, leaving him to live out his days as a vegetable while the world forgot him. But Louis Cyphre never forgets. Cyphre had a contract with the singer, stipulating payment upon Johnnys deathpayment that will be denied as long as Johnny clings to life. When Cyphre hires private investigator Harry Angel to find Johnny at the hospital, Angel learns that the singer has disappeared. It is no ordinary missing-persons case. Everyone he questions dies soon after, as Angels investigation ensnares him in a bizarre tangle of black magic, carnival freaks, and grisly voodoo. When the sinister Louis Cyphre begins appearing in Angels dreams, the detective fears for his life, his sanity, and his soul. This ebook features an illustrated biography of William Hjortsberg including rare photos from the authors personal collection.

Harry Angel is a tough private eye in the classic mould, who is hired by the mysterious Louis Cyphre to track down a war-wounded ex-crooner called Johnny Favorite who was supposedly in a coma since 1943 but who has inconveniently vanished. Angel's attempt to get to the bottom of Favorite's disappearance lead him down a dark path. Published in 1978, this effortlessly evokes the atmosphere of late-fifties New York.

Mehso-so

After this came up in a phot challenge 2 yrs ago I decided to grab a copy 2nd hand but have just read it. The film Angel Heart was based on this book ,written in 78 and based in the 50s Harry angel PI in mahattan is hired by Louis cyphre to find a lost singing idol. With voodoo + devil worship Harry is heading for deep water. Very old style chandleresque with some uncomfortable sexual references.if you enjoy a bit of black diabolic crime its OK.

Centique I remember liking the movie but that was so long ago! 4y

After seeing the brill posts so far esp ref the wonderful billie holliday i had to try and think of something. I saw the film yrs ago when rourke was handsome, harry angel detective, & de niro made good films +was the devil. But i looked up the book and it is now one i have to read, looks great - in searching the author mentions the seedy 50s ny he set the book in incl the 'long gone huberts flea circu harlem'.

TrishB Oh I loved this film! And I don‘t say that very often. 6y

This was only $1.99, and Book Riot made it sound so weirdly interesting that I just had to invest.

Falling Angel: A Novel | William Hjortsberg

The novel that was adapted for the film Angel Heart. I loved the movie all these years and the book has nearly the same dialogue. Great slingshot memory back to 1987 when we went to the 10pm screening and took the bus back in the dark fog past midnight.
