Suddenly, Love
Suddenly, Love: A Novel | Aharon Appelfeld
5 posts | 4 read | 8 to read
A poignant, heartbreaking new work by “one of the best novelists alive” (Irving Howe)—the story of a lonely older man and his devoted young caretaker who transform each other’s lives in ways they could never have imagined. Ernst is a gruff seventy-year-old Red Army veteran from Ukraine who landed, almost by accident, in Israel after World War II. A retired investment adviser, he lives alone (his first wife and baby daughter were killed by the Nazis; he divorced his shrewish second wife) and spends his time laboring over his unpublished novels. Irena, in her mid-thirties, is the unmarried daughter of Holocaust survivors who has been taking care of Ernst since his surgery two years earlier; she arrives every morning promptly at eight and usually leaves every afternoon at three. Quiet and shy, Irena is in awe of Ernst’s intellect. And as the months pass, Ernst comes to depend on the gentle young woman who runs his house, listens to him read from his work, and occasionally offers a spirited commentary on it. But Ernst’s writing gives him no satisfaction, and he is haunted by his godless, Communist past. His health, already poor, begins to deteriorate even further; he becomes mired in depression and seems to lose the will to live. But this is something Irena will not allow. As she becomes an increasingly important part of his life—moving into his home, encouraging him in his work, easing his pain—Ernst not only regains his sense of self and discovers the path through which his writing can flow but he also discovers, to his amazement, that Irena is in love with him. And, even more astonishing, he realizes that he is in love with her, too. From the Hardcover edition.

Mehso-so

I hate to rate this book not as a pick because it is exceptional and the title is misleading. It is a love story but an unusual one. The character of Ernst is very well developed and his life story (Jewish communist / Russian soldier hunting down Nazis but also rich Jews) is extremely interesting BUT the female character Irina's devotion and submission are irrititating. She is the servant, nurturer/ caretaker with no life of her own. :(

Pickpick

I finished this amazing book in one sitting. Literally. Total reading time: 5 hours. It is a fabulous story about the tender, caring intimacy between a 70 year old writer and his shy, quiet caregiver and how their relationship helps him confronts his past and helps her let go of hers.. MUST READ!

I can't even begin to describe how amazing this book is. It's so simple and easy to read but every page is so thought provoking! I love Jewish literature. But I have learned more about Jewish culture from this book than all other books put together.

The previous generations seem to have had a more grounded opinion of writing. Writing was a way to preserve culture - to record life in a way future generations could observe and learn from.. Have we moved away from that kind of a writing culture???

DitrieMarieBowie No idea. My ancestors would have written in Spanish. And before that, probably a little Yoruba and Taino. Maybe even Arabic, French, Gaelic, or Hebrew. We're not quite clear on the particulars. 8y
ramyasbookshelf @DitrieMarieBowie wow! You have such an interesting ancestry! No matter how far I trace back, everyone in my ancestry line is from the same area in the south of India :) 8y
DitrieMarieBowie @DitrieMarieBowie I don't know if it's so much interesting as not very well documented. I'm Puerto Rican, and the island has been a hodgepodge of cultures. Lots of Chinese there, too, but I doubt that made it into my bloodline. 🙃 8y
