For Vn Uoc, fantasies fall into two categories: nourishing or pointless. Daydreaming about attending her own art opening? Nourishing. Daydreaming about Billy Gardiner, star of the rowing team who doesn't even know she's alive? Pointless. So Vn Uoc tries to stick to her reality--keeping a low profile as a scholarship student at her prestigious Melbourne private school, managing her mother's PTSD from a traumatic emigration from Vietnam, and admiring Billy from afar. Until she makes a wish that inexplicably--possibly magically--comes true. Billy actually notices her. In fact, he seems to genuinely like her. But as they try to fit each other into their very different lives, Vn Uoc can't help but wonder why Billy has suddenly fallen for her. Is it the magic of first love, or is it magic from a well-timed wish that will eventually, inevitably, come to an end?

A lovely YA story of love and identity, this is the story of a second generation Vietnamese-Australian girl trying to balance her life as an Australian teenager and the expectations her immigrant parents have for her as she experiences first love with the school‘s golden boy. My second book in 2020, I pulled this from the growing stacks of “should be read next” books (3 stacks and counting) and it fits for #readwithmrbook too. Win-win!

@MrBook

Riveted_Reader_Melissa That‘s a great cover too! 5y

2015 was a difficult year professionally. I found myself unemployed and at 50 ish, it seemed impossible I would work full time again. Cloudwish by Fiona Wood is an astonishing book and my 2015 pick. Van Uoc shows 2 distinct lives - an external one of obedience and passivity, and an inner one which is bold, snarky and rebellious. She‘s brilliant. Other highlights include A Single Stone Meg MacKinlay & The Flywheel by Erin Gough #tenbooksonedecade

Never listen to fools who dis Jane Eyre as being a story about a girl who gets her mean man. This is a character who gets what she wants and lives on her own terms by having moral fortitude, intelligence, courage, imagination and a will of iron. And that is one hell of a checklist.

I liked this book. The premise was awesome and I loved reading about the parent's immigration and how the mc felt distanced from them by culture. There were a lot of slow parts though. There was school drama ad friend drama but not enough focus on the home/family life for my liking. That said, the romance was super sweet and lovely. *spoiler* I wish Van's parents met Billy in the book.

Cracking this one open next. I'm so interested in reading a story about a Vietnamese immigrant in Australia!

I love Wood's writing and think she does knockout contemporary YA. Time to dig into her October upcoming release (so excited I'm breaking my backlist only July for it)

One of the best young adult books I read in 2015 has just been included on a Short List of 6 by a panel of 'experts' here in Australia. It looks like US readers have a version over there. If you can find it, read it! It's wonderful.
