Charlotte Gray | Sebastian Faulks

Faulks's first novel since the extraordinary success of Birdsong is written with the same passion, power and breadth of vision. Set in England and France during the darkest days of World War II, Charlotte Gray, like Birdsong, depicts a complex love affair that is both shaped and thwarted by war. It is 1942. London is blacked out, but France is under a greater darkness, as the occupying Nazi forces encroach ever closer in a tense waiting game. Charlotte Gray, a volatile but determined young woman, travels south from Edinburgh. Working in London, she has a brief but intense love affair with an RAF pilot. When his plane is lost over France, she contrives to go there herself to work in the Resistance and to search for him--but then is unwilling to leave as she finds that the struggle for the country's fate is intimately linked to her own battle to take control of her life. Faulks's novel is an examination of lost paradises, politics without belief, the limits of memory, the redemptive power of art and the existence of hope beyond reason. It is also a brilliant evocation of life in Occupied France and, more significantly, a revelation of the appalling price many Frenchmen paid to survive in unoccupied, so-called Free France. As the men, women and children of Charlotte's small town prepare to meet their terrible destiny, the truth of what took place in wartime France is finally exposed. When private lives and public events fatally collide, the roots of the characters' lives are torn up and exposed. These harrowing scenes are presented with the passion and narrative force that readers will recall from Birdsong. Charlotte Gray will attract even more readers to Faulks's remarkable fiction.

Charlotte Gray‘s lover is #lostinFrance during the occupation. Can she take advantage of being parachuted into a small French village, to take part in undercover work, to trace him?

I remember loving both the book and the film back along, but very little else about them!

Cathythoughts I have this one ... must read 👍🏻 6y
BarbaraBB Yes I thought of Faulks too. Many of his war novels are situated in France! 6y

Based on women in the Special Operations Executive sent undercover into occupied France during the 1939 - 1945 war.

Charlotte Gray trains as an SOE agent. As well as carrying out her mission she searches for her airman lover who has been declared MIA (missing in action).

lahousewyfe These types of books are my jam these days! 6y
Cinfhen Sounds good!!! 6y

Sebastian Faulks is on of my #favouriteauthors

TrishB Just reading this one at the moment. 6y
Ardachy @TrishB #Engleby is one of his best in my view. 6y
TrishB And creepy..... 6y
Ardachy @TrishB Indeed. An added benefit for me was that, if I remember correctly, a lot of the action takes place in Cambridge which I am familiar with. 6y
TrishB Yes it definitely is - though they never actually say Cambridge! 6y

#septembowie #sorrow

There‘s a scene in this book that made me cry harder than any other book has (except Kite Runner - that‘s up there too 😰) I won‘t tell you what it because it‘s a great book and I really recommend reading it. That scene will stay with me forever.

Pics of rural France thanks Google.

Cinfhen I'm intrigued #stacked 7y
Marchpane Sounds like a great read. I know I saw the movie way back, but the details have faded... 7y
Centique @Cinfhen awesome! I hope you love it too. @marchpane I think the movie might have concentrated on the love story but the story of the French villagers is even better. 7y

So, this is a tad embarrassing- I *think* I've read this. Or did I just watch the film? 🤔

I've enjoyed the Sebastian Faulks I have read, either way, so maybe it's time to read more.

(Also, yay! Muse!) #resistance #junetunz

Joanne1 I read my first Sebastian Falks last year. So good, but hard to read in parts (graphic war scenes). 8y
rockpools @Joanne1 I know I haven't read that one, for that very reason. I'd probably be able to now. I loved 8y
Joanne1 @RachelO I'll check that on out at the library next time I'm there. Thanks for the rec. 8y
Reviewsbylola That's definitely happened to me before. 😬 Drives me nuts. That's why I became religious about always entering my books into Goodreads. 8y
rockpools @Reviewsbylola For some reason I find GR just overwhelming- can totally see the advantages, but it sends me a bit 😨! I've started an old-school pen&paper reading journal this year, which is working great. But it's not going to solve my dodgy memory problems 😕! Hopeless, I know! I might have read this, or it could have been 8y
Reviewsbylola I feel that I don't get a lot from GR. I like doing their yearly challenge and I usually enter (and lose) a lot of their giveaways, but I don't spend a lot of time there. It doesn't have the same sense of community and interaction as Litsy. I just like it because I can easily see what books I've read and when. 8y
