Multiple award-winning young adult author Sara Ella reimagines The Little Mermaid in a powerful and unexpected way. Sixteen-year-old mermaid Coral has always been different, standing out from her stoic sisters in a society where blending in is key. Worse yet, she fears she has been afflicted with the dreaded Disease. Said to be carried by humans, the Disease imposes emotions on its victims, causing them to commit unspeakable acts. The growing illness inside her, while terrifying, fascinates her very core. Where others see danger, Coral sees life. Could it be the colorless merfolk who are truly ill? Above the sea, seventeen-year-old Brooke Jordan has nothing left to give. A homeless girl abandoned and forgotten, the only thing Brooke can rely on is the ocean. Her aching feet find refuge within the cool and comforting waves, while her broken heart grows harder with each passing day. When Brooke's and Coral's worlds collide, everything alters in an instant. From learning to stand alone, to discovering the strength it takes to rely on another, the girls find that living requires taking that first painful breath. Each must make sacrifices, and when it comes to finding true love? Let's just say the boys in their lives must learn to swim if they're ever going to survive the storms. Battling the odds against them, the girls will do whatever it takes to survive. But what must end for love and life to finally begin? Taking a new twist on Hans Christian Andersen's beloved fairy tale, this modern-day story explores mental health from several perspectives, questioning what it means to be human in a world where humanity often seems lost.

In Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society, Juliet wrote that she believed sometimes books found their way to the people who needed to read them. This book has been on my list for some time, and I finally got to reading it. A re-telling of Hans Christian Anderson‘s The Little Mermaid disguised as an uplifting story about mental health. I am not nothing, and neither are you.

This was such a touching story of healing. Trigger warnings for anxiety, suicide and trauma, but they are all dealt with so gently, so realistically. Took about halfway through to really get the feel that Corals and Brookes story is the same. Just told through a different lens since the trauma was so bad. The end wraps up so nicely. I can tell which character was which by the end. You are not nothing. Suicide prevention lifeline 1-800-273-TALK

Maybe that young woman with her designer bag and eyes glued to her phone suffers from anxiety, depression or even PTSD. That‘s the thing about mental illness. It has many faces. And most of them look pretty normal. You never know the person is slowly dying inside.

Half way thoughts. These three characters are starting to blend together. Though it‘s Coral and Merrick each looking for someone they lost, and Brooke -still separate from then-starting to feel like she belongs in this world and doesn‘t want to die. I‘m getting the sense that this book is actually Brookes way of healing. Also, I really like the way that all this trauma is handled. Real, yet simple. Painful, yet hopeful. Pills and therapists.

A couple of nothings, making their way towards something. Something beautiful. Something real. Something I haven‘t seen in quite some time. This getting really real and is making me tear up.

Alright, here we go. Here we follow three characters- each taking turns narrating. I‘ve read to their each first chapter so far. Coral; the little mermaid stricken with the “Disease” of emotions and doesn‘t want the life her father created for her. Brooke; teenager whose feels lost in her life and wants out, wakes in a clinic. Merrick; son of the perfect wealthy father who “wants the best for his children” while manipulating as much as he can.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

The author handled some tough subjects thoughtfully and with interesting symbolism that I hope will provoke meaningful discussion. I think Coral is an important book but urge readers to enter with the right frame of mind. This book deals with the authentic heaviness of life and its effect on those who are in deep pain.

What are you reading now? Do you expect to finish it before the month ends?

My current reads: An ebook called The Other Wife by Claire McGowan, Coral by Sara Ella, and Here To Stay by Mark Edwards. I‘m pretty certain the only thing I can expect to finish before November 1 rolls in is Here To Stay.

MoniqueReads305 I'm currently only reading one book, The Desirable Sister. I'm going to try and finish it today so I can listen to The Tale of Sleepy Hollow tomorrow to celebrate Halloween. Since I have to work during the festivities. 5y

Coral not only contains one of my favorite things - mermaids - it explores important topics: trauma and mental health.

“For the girl who is not okay. For the boy who wonders if it will ever get better. This story is for you. My hope is that Coral‘s tale may be a small pinprick of light in your darkness - a reminder that you are seen. You are loved. You are not alone. You are not nothing, my friend. And neither am I.” ~Sara Ella
