My Favorite Book by Dostoyevsky

Short, impactful, and as is customary for him, it manages to unfold particularly complex psychological processes through story and characters. In my work, I have heard stories from gamblers, but reading the book and entering the soul and emotional turmoil of a gambler, even feeling empathy towards him, is certainly beyond my ability to describe the book. It is worth reading not just once.

I've read quite a few of Dostoevsky's books, but this one was probably the most enjoyable. I'm not saying it's the best, I like his longer works more, but The Gambler is different. It's short and seems light, but of course between the lines you'll find lots of food for thought. It's compulsively readable. It's intense but not overwhelming. The character studies and the exploration of addiction are excellent. I loved the grandmother the best 😁

I am posting one book per day from my to-be-read collection. No description and providing no reason for wanting to read it. Some will be old, some will be new - don't judge me, I have a lot of books.

I‘ll call this a pick because at the moment it is my favourite Dostoevsky novel...mainly because it is short 😂 His protagonists are really hyped up emotionally and are exhausting to read about.

Oh hello pandemic anxiety brain! 😬

It was an audio book. It counts, right?

An interesting story about a General, a tutor, a Frenchman, an Englishman, a young woman, a grandmother, casinos, roulette, and of course gambling. Behind the facade of propriety, either love or money seem to drive these characters.

I'm Beginning to delve into the Russian authors. This one is a bit dry, but still a pick.

Poor narration though, and the bits that were in French were atrocious.

Dostoyevsky famously rushed to finish this novel to pay off his own gambling debts. But he had to rush because of another bet of sorts with his publisher: if he didn't deliver a novel in time, F.T. Stellovsky could publish his works for 9 years without paying him. He finished in less than a month.
