The Uses of Enchantment
The Uses of Enchantment: The Meaning and Importance of Fairy Tales | Bruno Bettelheim
Bruno Bettelheim was one of the great child psychologists of the twentieth century and perhaps none of his books has been more influential than this revelatory study of fairy tales and their universal importance in understanding childhood development. Analyzing a wide range of traditional stories, from the tales of Sindbad to “The Three Little Pigs,” “Hansel and Gretel,” and “The Sleeping Beauty,” Bettelheim shows how the fantastical, sometimes cruel, but always deeply significant narrative strands of the classic fairy tales can aid in our greatest human task, that of finding meaning for one’s life. From the Trade Paperback edition.

I‘ve always loved Little Red. I haven‘t read this yet, but heard it was great! #sleep #coolbooks #fairytales

Aimeesue I have this on my TBR pile. Last summer I did a whole fairytales theme, and read a lot of the original stories plus a lot of retellings. It was a lot of fun. 7y
Thndrstd I read this in college. It‘s awesome. I‘m probably due for a reread 7y

Some interesting analysis, some ridiculous reaching. His comments on the animal groom type stories leave me somewhat sceptical of his research, as he insists that males become beastly but animal brides are beautiful. That totally ignores the Loathly Lady stories -- a particular interest of mine since in some examples she's paired with the Arthurian Sir Gawain. Bettelheim's theory doesn't account for her at all.

I am finding some of his analysis and the way he relates fairytale to what children experience fascinating. Then there's the stuff which is just reaching way too far.
