Dawn Land
Dawn Land | Joseph Bruchac
8 posts | 4 read | 1 to read
Ten thousand years ago, in what would one day be known as North America, Young Hunter set out on an epic quest to overcome the Stone Giants who were terrorizing his people. Pitted against creatures of legend, Young Hunter journeyed to the innermost heart of his own humanity, even meeting the very gods of the land. He was entrusted with his tribe's most dangerous secret, a weapon that would change mankind forever. Inspired by the classic Joseph Bruchac novel, Will Davis brings a timeless story to life, as the lore of old spawns a thrilling new kind of graphic novel. Drawing from the enduring creation myths of the Abenaki nation, Dawn Land immerses readers in Young Hunter's vision quest and offers a fresh perspective on the Native American experience.

It took me a bit to get used to the style of the story and it starts out a bit slow as we learn about the Only People and their lives/culture, but once Young Hunter set out on his journey, I was hooked. I especially loved his relationship with his dogs!

“Reed looked hard at Young Hunter as she spoke those last words and he felt a shiver go down his spine. He understood. He saw who the fire hunters were and the greatness of their danger to all the people. He saw that they were beings to be pitied and feared. He saw too that his own weak seeing was needed now to help these people of the Village Between the Hills, as well as his own Dawn Land People.”

“The dogs looked up at him and then turned to run back in the direction from which they had come. Young Hunter faced the west and began to make his way quickly down the hill, angling toward the headland where his uncle had taken him four autumns before. As he ran, a part of his divided mind retold him that story of the hunter and his dogs. The rhythm of his grandmother‘s voice speaking the tale blended with the soft beat of his running feet.”

“All of the fear that had edged close to him was gone now. One of the dogs in the lean-to behind him stretched its legs, pressing them against Young Hunter‘s back. He would not think of tomorrow now. He would hold the sweetgrass basket close to his face and smell it; he would enjoy the warmth of his fire, and soon, the taste of his food. It would be enough. For now, it would be enough. Tomorrow he would reach the village of the Salmon People.”

I‘ve already mentioned A Walk in the Woods by Bryson, but it‘s the best book that has to do with hiking that I‘ve ever read, so it‘s getting another mention. One of my favorite things to do is hike, so it was extremely difficult to choose one photo, but I finally settled on one of the shots I took while down in the Smokies. A book with a significant walk (other than the obligatory LOTR mention) is the absolutely amazing Dawn Land.

This story was truly an experience. The entire thing felt like a dream. I loved the interwoven myths and legends of the Abenaki people within the narrative of the story. Though they deviate from the main plot a bit, they only add to the richness of the world and help the reader to better understand the cultures. Bruchac, an Abenaki tribe member himself, is a masterful storyteller and I will be eagerly searching for his other works. ❤️

mandarchy He's a great author. I have many of his books in my library. 4y

I feel like Muskrat is calling me out personally. 😅

I‘m absolutely loving this book so far. It‘s like reading in a dream, it‘s beautiful. I enjoy the naming of things and people. The insight into the culture through the native author is priceless. The humor is wonderful too and not what I expected from the more sobering blurbs on the back cover.

I‘m very nervous for the likable characters facing what lurks on the horizon... (◕﹏◕ )
