Karate Chop: Stories | Dorthe Nors
5 posts | 12 read | 3 to read
The first book in English by an acclaimed Danish writer: "beautiful, faceted, haunting stories . . . [from] a rising star" (Junot Daz)Karate Chop, Dorthe Nors's acclaimed story collection, is the debut book in the collaboration between Graywolf Press and A Public Space. These fifteen compact stories are meticulously observed glimpses of everyday life that expose the ominous lurking under the ordinary. While his wife sleeps, a husband prowls the Internet, obsessed with female serial killers; a bureaucrat tries to reinvent himself, exposing goodness as artifice when he converts to Buddhism in search of power; a woman sits on the edge of the bed where her lover lies, attempting to locate a motive for his violence within her own self-doubt. Shifting between moments of violence (real and imagined) and mundane contemporary life, these stories encompass the complexity of human emotions, our capacity for cruelty as well as compassion. Not so much minimalist as stealthy, Karate Chop delivers its blows with an understatement that shows a master at work.

I've officially run out of Dorthe Nors books that have been translated into English. Time to learn to read Danish? 😉

The last #gratitude30 prompt (😥) is #selflove. The one thing I do solely for myself besides reading is 🥋. I will be testing for my black belt in June. It is one of the few physical things I have stuck with. I am proud of myself!

Another slim volume for #24in48. This is a collection of stories from a Danish author who knows what she's doing. The stories are like being caught off guard while going about your everyday life out in the world. I wish we in the U.S. could get more translations of unusual literature like this.

"A good scientist is known by his ability to select." Clever Dorthe, I'd like to have a t-shirt with this line.
