The Old Man and Me | Elaine Dundy
15 posts | 6 read | 8 to read
InThe Dud Avocado, Elaine Dundy revealed the life of the young expatriate in Paris in all its hilarious and heartbreaking drama. WithThe Old Man and Me, written when Dundy was living in England in the early 1960s, she tackles the American girl in London, a bit older but certainly no wiser.Honey Flood (if thats her real name) arrives in London with only her quick wits and a scheme. To get what she wants, shell have to seduce the citys brightest literary star, no matter how many would-be bohemians she has to charm, how many smoky jazz clubs she has to brave, or how many Lady Something-Somethings she has to humor. But with success within her reach, Honey finds that in making the Soho scene, shes made a big mistake.

Another quarter of #booked2019 complete! The tagged book was definitely my fav (#nyrb does it again) and Groff's short story (cli-fi) my least fav. Happy to say I finally read Tender is the Night but wow was it a slog!! And unpopular opinion alert... I thought There, There was just ok 🤷🏻‍♀️
Thanks for hosting, friends 😄

AlaMich Have you read The Dud Avocado? I wonder if this one feels similar to that. 5y
emilyhaldi Yes!! @AlaMich I loved Dud Avocado as well. They both have very similar voices as well as premise.. young American girl looking for adventure in Europe. I found the storyline of Old Man to be slightly more sinister... 5y
AlaMich @emilyhaldi I‘ll have to pick it up, since I enjoyed Avocado! 😊 5y

Theaelizabet Both of these Dundys are on my TBR and...There There was...ok. Much good stuff, and I‘ll look forward to his next work, but ok sums this one up for me. 5y
LeahBergen I have both of the Dundys waiting on my shelf. I‘m hesitant to pick up any NYRBs to read lately in case they are picked for our #NYRBBookClub 😆 5y
Cinfhen Nicely done 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻I thought There There was very uneven ~ but there was enough there to make me want to pick him up again!! 5y
Ashley_Nicoletto 🙋🏻‍♀️ I also thought there there was just ok. 5y
Reviewsbylola I gave TitN 4 stars but I don‘t remember a whole lot. I still need to read Elaine Dundy. 🙈 5y
emilyhaldi Youre smart! @LeahBergen somehow #nyrbbookclub has had the opposite effect on me... They're all I want to read at the moment! 5y
merelybookish Ditto @Cinfhen on There, There. Flawed book but the writer is talented! 5y

Theaelizabet Lovely! I‘ve had The Dud Avocado on my TBR for so long. 6y
emilyhaldi The book is great!! @BarbaraBB So different from Dud Avocado... this one has a darker side to it 🖤 6y
BarbaraBB @emilyhaldi Too bad you won‘t nominate it for next month‘s NYRB Bookclub 😉, I‘d love a reason to buy it! 🤣 6y

Honey Flood (can you even with that name?!?!!) #dreams of making it big in London in the 60‘s. Using just her wit and charm she gets to work seducing one of the biggest literary stars in the city... just to find that perhaps making it big isn‘t what she wanted after all. I LOVED the Dud Avocado and am really looking forward to this one 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

vivastory I really really need to read Dud Avocado! 6y
merelybookish I also loved The Dud Avocado. Excited to hear what you think of this one! 6y

Kalalalatja Why haven‘t I read any of her books yet, they sound so good! 6y
Reviewsbylola Still need to read Avocado. 6y
Mdargusch I still have Dud Avocado on my TBR 🙃 6y
BarbaraBB Very convincing! Which one should I start with? 6y
emilyhaldi I think you can start with either! @BarbaraBB I haven‘t read this one yet. I hear it‘s similar to Avocado, but different characters so you should be safe regardless! 6y

#traveltuesday • apparently not nearly as acclaimed as The Dud Avocado (somewhat based on the author‘s life) but always my favorite of the two by far. Again, I read this gem at least 3 or 4 times in my early 20s • to me, Honey Flood (“if that‘s her real name”) was a gutsier version of Edith Wharton‘s “Summer” protagonist Charity Royall, both of whom I identified with at that age.

I‘m learning about LibraryThing as I go. FYI: Barcodeless and/or ISBNless books can be added by searching the Library of Congress catalogue (or one of many others in various countries).

I‘m frustrated by the difficulty in adding ebooks, though—I like for even those covers & editions to match. Does anyone know of a good way to add them?

ETA: Overcat search is yielding great results!

Moray_Reads I'm not finding it very intuitive, I keep adding books multiple times because there's no obvious confirmation when it's been successful. It's been useful as hell again at work, I'm about 95% done with my copyright assessment (I think!) 7y
saresmoore @rubyslippersreads Good eye! You and @LeahBergen inspired me to find a copy! Mine is naked, though, so I‘ll be looking for a nicer one...for under $100, preferably. 😆 7y
saresmoore @Moray_Reads Woohoo! Home stretch! You are right about it not being intuitive. It lacks the finesse that I appreciate in Goodreads—especially having all the search engines merged and clear editions with their respective covers. GR is clearly consumer driven and LT is catered to libraries, naturally. I suppose I shouldn‘t compare them directly, but I have no experience with online book databases. 7y
Moray_Reads @saresmoore speaking professionally many of them suffer from the same problems. Got to be vigilant gatekeepers of that specialist knowledge or no-one would need librarians 😉 But there are definitely small tweaks that would help ALL users! 7y
saresmoore @Moray_Reads I think your feedback would be welcomed by @TimSpalding (over time). I like what I‘ve seen of the open communication on LT, so far. And regarding librarians as vigilant gatekeepers, I think we both know the example to be followed there...Ook! Eek! 7y
ValerieAndBooks If you have the LT app downloaded, you can add them quicker that way overall (and the app will immediately let you know if you‘ve already added that title) and then edit the covers on the desktop. That‘s what I do. @Moray_Reads 7y
LeahBergen @saresmoore @rubyslippersreads Keep an eye out for one with the dustcover. I only paid $18 for mine so they do turn up! 7y
saresmoore @ValerieAndBooks That‘s good advice. I was doing a version of that, but I think I hadn‘t figured out the mobile app search options yet. Much better when searching via Overcat than Amazon! 7y
saresmoore @LeahBergen I will! Fortunately, I picked this one up for only a few bucks. I‘ll create myself a little AbeBooks want and see what comes along. 😊 7y
LauraBeth I have a general LT question...🙃 I have quite the TBR list which is being imported from GR. If I don‘t own these, would I just categorize them as to read, unowned and not check the your library box (the default), since technically they‘re not a part of my physical library? 🤔 7y
LeahBergen @saresmoore It‘s still a pretty little book without the dustcover. 💕 7y
ValerieAndBooks @laurabeth yes, you can create folders and name them whatever you want (I.e. read but unowned, ‘TBR but unowned , and then remove/unclick “your library “. Hop that helps! 7y
saresmoore @LauraBeth I did exactly what @ValerieAndBooks suggested! I like that the collections aren‘t mutually exclusive. When they come over from Goodreads, the categories will appear as tags. From the tag edit page, you can edit each tag and send all the books with that tag to a particular collection. It makes it go much faster that way! 7y
LauraBeth Ah - got it @saresmoore. Importing my GR library now 😬 7y
saresmoore @LauraBeth Best wishes! Now tell that family of yours that they‘re fending for themselves for dinner. 😬🤞 7y
LauraBeth @saresmoore 😂 the husband is going to be like, “what did you do today?” I‘m getting off lucky for dinner bc it‘s Wednesday which means Emma has youth group and we have dinner date night ☺️ 7y
saresmoore @LauraBeth Last night at the dinner table, and I quote, Bryan said, “So what‘s this library thing that you‘ve been doing all day?” He was shocked when I encouraged him to rent a super hero movie from the RedBox since I had evening plans. 😁🤓 7y
Moray_Reads @ValerieAndBooks thanks for the tip, that did make things faster! 7y

Here are the purchases from my visit to the downtown indie bookstore today. They had loads of vintage books with new, affordable paperbacks nestled in between.

@Ole Check out the rugged 1926 edition of Barchester Towers that I found! It‘s inscribed in pencil to a Ms. Vivian Kelly Schultz, April 1930, Cornell University 😊

Ole Wow! Lucky you! Is it an illustrated edition? In any case, happy reading 😁 7y
EvieBee Nice haul! Loving that Dundy edition. 7y
saresmoore @Ole Alas, it‘s not illustrated, but it does have some pretty endpapers & title page. Thanks again for the recommendation! 7y

saresmoore @EvieBee Isn‘t she a beaut? It‘s a first edition, 1964, but missing the very fun dust jacket. 7y
LeahBergen Ooo! Are you having a Trollope spree (not a trollop spree 😆)? I need to get started on my own. And the Dundy! 👏🏻👏🏻 7y
saresmoore @LeahBergen That really is an important E, isn‘t it? Haha! It seems I might! Care to join me? 7y

Pickpick

Such an engaging & intriguing book- part mystery in reverse, as we learn Honey's identity and her motives, part societal satire of life abroad in the early 60s, and part softcore psychological horror, as we watch two sociopaths circle each other in the friendliest way possible. Like the older, chillier spiritual successor to Dundy's The Dud Avocado- and every bit as good. 👓📖

"Why are we so sad?" I once asked in despair. "Why do we always feel so sad afterwards?" "Because we both belong to the same generation," I was told sadly, "and all our same worries come back to us at the same time..."
