Zhao's debut novel is a middle grade fantasy inspired by Chinese mythology and folklore. This is a fast-paced novel that takes you on a trip across the United States. There is a strong focus on the theme that things are not always what they appear and that one shouldn't judge based on appearances. This was more of a 3.5⭐️ for me.

I was excited to read this one. It‘s Rick Riordanesque but with Chinese mythology. I love that it‘s an #ownvoices story written by a Chinese American author. I definitely think that the book will benefit from the inclusion of a glossary (which there are pages set aside for) because there is a lot of Chinese terminology used that isn‘t explained in context. There is a lot of clunky writing too.
