The Conscious Closet
The Conscious Closet: The Revolutionary Guide to Looking Good While Doing Good | Elizabeth L. Cline
5 posts | 8 read | 9 to read
From journalist, fashionista, and clothing resale expert Elizabeth L. Cline, "the Michael Pollan of fashion,"* comes the definitive guide to building an ethical, sustainable wardrobe you'll love. With her landmark investigation Overdressed: The Shockingly High Cost of Cheap Fashion, Elizabeth Cline was the first to reveal fast fashion's hidden toll on garment workers, the environment, and even our own satisfaction with our clothes. The Conscious Closet shows exactly what we can do about it. Based on her personal experiences getting off the fast-fashion treadmill and figuring out a common-sense and affordable approach to conscious style, Elizabeth will share how to pare down your closet; swap, resell, or recycle what you don't love; better care for and repair what you do; and how to affordably buy, thrift, or rent the ethical wardrobe of your dreams. Whether your goal is to build an effortless capsule wardrobe, keep up with trends, buy quality, seek out ethical brands, or all of the above, this is the book for you. The Conscious Closet is not just a style guide. It is a manifesto and call to action to transform one of the most polluting industries on earth, fashion, into a force for good, on both a micro level-- our own closets--and macro level, by learning where and how our clothes are made, and how to connect to a global and impassioned community of stylish fashion revolutionaries for bigger systematic change. Clothing is one of the most personal expressions of who we are, and in The Conscious Closet, Elizabeth aims to help readers truly understand and love their clothes again--without sacrificing the environment or their morals in the process. *Michelle Goldberg, Newsweek/The Daily Beast

An informative book for anyone wanting to learn more about the downside of fast fashion and how we can all start having a more conscious closet. Great advice on ways to shop/obtain clothes in a more mindful and sustainable way. It included tips on where to buy from, how to care for the clothes you have and how to raise awareness of the pitfalls of fast fashion and the conditions some employees of the clothing trade work in. #theconsciouscloset

Something I want to work on in 2020 is being more ethical and eco-conscious with the things I consume. This was a great resource for getting started with that on the fashion side of things! Elizabeth Cline has really done her research and shares it all in easily digestible chapters that cover everything from better shopping and laundry practices to the best ways to donate/recycle clothes and even how to be more of an activist about these issues.

Wearing a garment just nine months longer reduces its carbon footprint by 20-30%.
