Hes a boy called Jew. Gypsy. Stopthief. Runt. Happy. Fast. Filthy son of Abraham. Hes a boy who lives in the streets of Warsaw. Hes a boy who steals food for himself and the other orphans. Hes a boy who believes in bread, and mothers, and angels. Hes a boy who wants to be a Nazi some day, with tall shiny jackboots and a gleaming Eagle hat of his own. Until the day that suddenly makes him change his mind. And when the trains come to empty the Jews from the ghetto of the damned, hes a boy who realizes its safest of all to be nobody. Newbery Medalist Jerry Spinelli takes us to one of the most devastating settings imaginableNazi-occupied Warsaw of World War IIand tells a tale of heartbreak, hope, and survival through the bright eyes of a young orphan. From the Hardcover edition.

Listen, if you liked The Boy in the Striped Pajamas, you will probably like this one. It suffered from a similar problem - I just couldn't believe the ignorance, naivete and utter incomprehension of the situation and surroundings. Our main character, a street kid who grows up thieving, can't recognize cruelty? For me, this really didn't work at all and I didn't get a sense of what life in Warsaw and the ghetto was like.

Such a painfully deep novel of the Warsaw ghetto and an orphan. Loved it so much.

Such a real and raw story. I usually don‘t read a lot of books that dealt with the holocaust because I‘m a pretty sensitive person when it comes to reading about such horrible and real events. This book was perfect in the sense that it still told of the unforgivable things that were done, but in a more vanilla way. Beautifully sad book

Milkweed is a story about a small orphan child set in the Warsaw ghetto during the Holocaust. While the story is built around sad themes, there also were beautiful messages about survival, friendship, family and the need to belong. Told in an appropriate manner for the intended audience (middle grade), this is a great choice to introduce young minds to the history around WWII without graphically expounding on the horrific tragedies of that time.

I am huge historical fiction fan and love ww2 historical fiction. I loved the book because it was such a unique take on the war... I had never read anything about the war from this perspective. If you love historical fiction I would highly suggest checking this book out!!!

The book was great at the beginning, but as you read on the events never lead up to an interesting climax. The plot twists are minor. I give it an 6/10.

Library haul. I‘ve read Milkweed before but wanted to reread it. Was hoping to find Loser as well but did not. 3 memoirs from our US history.. can‘t wait to read those.
