Sammy Keyes and the Hotel Thief
Sammy Keyes and the Hotel Thief | Wendelin Van Draanen

"The most winning junior detective ever in teen lit. (Take that, Nancy Drew!)" Midwest Children's Book Review What Sammy should have done was put the binoculars down and call 911. What she does instead is tighten up the focus on her right eye to get a better look. There's something very familiar about this thief. But when Sammy eventually spills her story to Officer Borsch, he doesn't believe her. He treats her like some snot-nosed little kid. Well, Sammy's not going to stand for that. She's a snot-nosed seventh grader now, and she knows what she saw. And somehow she's going to prove it. The Sammy Keyes mysteries are fast-paced, funny, thoroughly modern, and true whodunits. Each mystery is exciting and dramatic, but it's the drama in Sammy's personal life that keeps readers coming back to see what happens next with her love interest Casey, her soap-star mother, and her mysterious father. From the Hardcover Library Binding edition.

The fun cover caught my eye, and it‘s a fun story too.

Sammy Keyes is a spunky girl facing a number of challenges - not the least of which is starting 7th grade! She lives with her grandmother, but shouldn‘t, as it‘s a senior housing facility. Limited on what she can do since she has to lay low, she checks out the neighborhood with binoculars. And that is when she sees a man riffling a purse in the apartment across the street, and he sees her…⬇️

mabell Sammy is a smart detective, and I loved the comeuppance she served to her personal bully. A little overly MG at times for me, like watching Disney/Nickelodeon show, but overall enjoyable.

I‘ve already disillusioned many of you with the Nancys + Harriets of the world on my podcast (sorry!), but — spoiler alert — modern mystery gal Sammy Keyes remains in my high esteem after the SSR treatment. She feels real to me (even as a 28-year-old) and has so much to teach about interpersonal relationships and the danger of snap judgments. Tune in to the latest episode for lots of Sammy talk + pop culture references. Link to listen in bio!

I read this when it first came out and added it to my library order that was almost twenty years ago! I bought this copy for my daughter and I think I like the new cover art! That's not usually the case for me.

I can't wait to share these books with my future daughter. Who needs Nancy Drew when you have Sammy?
