The Finishing School
The Finishing School | Muriel Spark
7 posts | 8 read | 2 to read
From Muriel Spark, the grande dame of literary satire, comes this swift, deliciously witty tale of writerly ambition that recalls her beloved The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie.College Sunrise is a somewhat louche and vaguely disreputable finishing school located, for now, in Lausanne, Switzerland. Rowland Mahler and his wife, Nina, run the school as a way to support themselves while he works, somewhat falteringly, on his novel. Into Rowlands creative writing class comes seventeen-year-old Chris Wiley, a red-haired literary prodigy whose historical novel-in-progress, on Mary Queen of Scots, has already excited the interest of publishers. The inevitable result: keen envy, and a game of cat and mouse fraught with jealousy and attraction, both literary and sexual. From the Trade Paperback edition.

This was a cute story. And a really short #audiobook. This author's stories are fluffy on the top level but she always has a much deeper message. This one is about obsession.

1. Please don‘t make me choose between Juliette Binoche and Judi Dench
2. Everyday is a workday. No real bedtime
3. Fiction - tagged book
4. A good chefs knife (why the *bleep* did I wait so long), cast iron skillets
5. Library - at least once a week.

MinDea Yes! Knives are such good kitchen tools. Good knives! And I love our cast iron skillet! 7y
Dolly @MinDea 😀 7y
JamieArc Judi Dench would have been my choice as well. 7y

alisiakae I almost picked chef‘s knife too! Indispensable. 7y
Dolly @JamieArc She‘s so awesome an actress but I‘m sad that she‘s having health issues☹️ 7y
Dolly @4thhouseontheleft I have great respect for that knife. Cutting everything like butter is pure joy. Maybe best of all is that the carrots don‘t jump off the cutting board! 🔪🥕 7y
hgrimes Everyone who claims cooking is a chore I assume just doesn‘t have a good chef‘s knife! 7y
Dolly @hgrimes I agree! In the past I hated dog work. Now I look forward to cuttin‘ up stuff. 7y

I loved the way Spark tantalizingly unfolded this plot with bits of puzzling clues, or were they not clues? The relationships were so odd. The ending, I thought, fell a tad flat but was only revealed in the last couple pages. I‘m a Spark fan and look forward to reading more of her work. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

@Jas16 #arcsforme
These two guys are each writing a book. Rowland is the head of this school and is weird and jealous of Chris, a student, making for a delicious plot. Under 200 pages with large type. I‘ve smacked Rowland upside the head once already.

Jas16 That does sound like a delicious plot! Thanks for entering! 7y

Didn't care for it. Started off fun but then it kind of went off the rails and wound up boring me.

This was an enjoyable book. A bit confusing at times; things seemed to slow down and then abruptly speed up (keeping readers on their toes). For me the best part was the voice on the audiobook; there was the slightest accent which drew me into the novel.
