In early-1900s Los Angeles-- an era of courting, ragtime, suffragettes, and widespread corruption-- a socialite turned police matron discovers a long-lost brother and then tracks down a murderer--who might be him. Los Angeles, 1908. Former heiress, Anna Blanc, is precariously employed by the Los Angeles Police Department, reforming delinquent children and minding lady jailbirds. What she really wants is to hunt criminals and be alone with Detective Joe Singer--both no-nos that could get her fired. On a lover's tryst in Griffith Park, Anna and Joe discover the body of young gambler. Anna can't resist. She's on the case. Then a mysterious man, Georges Devereaux, comes to Central Station claiming to be Anna's illegitimate brother. Anna's estranged father confirms Georges' parentage. But Georges soon falls under suspicion for the Griffith Park murder and flees. Anna sets off on a journey to find Georges and exonerate him. It leads her to an aging French dancer, a charismatic church, and a long, unchaperoned train ride into the desert with Joe in Georges private railcar. Pitted against Joe, Anna must bravely confront her own bias and solve the crime, even if it means losing the men she loves.
