Everybody Sees the Ants | A.S. King

Lucky Linderman didn't ask for his life. He didn't ask his grandfather not to come home from the Vietnam War. He didn't ask for a father who never got over it. He didn't ask for a mother who keeps pretending their dysfunctional family is fine. And he didn't ask to be the target of Nader McMillan's relentless bullying, which has finally gone too far.But Lucky has a secret--one that helps him wade through the daily mundane torture of his life. In his dreams, Lucky escapes to the war-ridden jungles of Laos--the prison his grandfather couldn't escape--where Lucky can be a real man, an adventurer, and a hero. It's dangerous and wild, and it's a place where his life just might be worth living. But how long can Lucky keep hiding in his dreams before reality forces its way inside?Michael L. Printz Honor recipient A.S. King's smart, funny and boldly original writing shines in this powerful novel about learning to cope with the shrapnel life throws at you and taking a stand against it.

This book was so good! It's about a boy who's been bullied for years by the same person. Him and his mom go away for a bit and it does wonders. At the same time he has these dreams about his grandfather who was a pow/mia from Vietnam, and it's not what you expect!

This YA coming of age story packs a punch! I laughed a little, I cringed a little and I cried a lot. This book was poignant in a way I haven't experienced in a long time. There are SO many feels right now having just this moment turned the last page. If you're into the YA genre. If you're into stories about people in shitty situations that manage to find a way to overcome and become their best versions, then this book is a must read!

~ Enjoy

The simplest answer is to act.

“They don't know what love is. Here they learn what hate is, and I am so sad that they might never know love because hate came first.

“The ants say: aren't we all bleeding a little?”

“There is something magical about the world at night. Sitting at the dining room table, sipping a glass of iced tea, I can totally understand why Dad gets up so early. Minutes seem to last longer when the rest of the world is asleep.”

A.S King does it again, I don't know how she writes so many beautiful, touching and extraordinarily well done novels. I have yet to read a book by A.S King I didn't love. A.S King has the inexplicable talent of writing terribly dark, sad novels but resolving them with happy endings that are not cliched messes. She shows us that live can still be hard and messy, but still good and happy and joy filled, that things can and will get better.

50 pages and I just don‘t feel that interested in it. Not gonna let myself feel guilty since this is a library book, so I don‘t feel as bad about dnfing it.

Work week over. Time to take to my bed with this week‘s read. At least until I have to get up and do all the neglected housework....

I've read few of A.S. King's books so far, and this was one of my favorites. Intense, as it involves relentless bullying, but also funny with some much needed comic relief.

Painfully intense. Not my fav A.S. King novel, but her seemless blend of realism & unreality really worked in this one.
