Easily devoured because of the style of writing, and the power of her words and stories. She takes us through more of her life, the issues with her parents, the moves, the rape, her trip to Denmark as an exchange student, her college years, her work as an advocate and how she tours schools in the country to speak about sexual violence & assault. Equally powerful as Speak, it's a book not only worth reading, it was worth waiting over a decade for.

Published years after Speak, this memoir in verse reveals the real life roots of that novel. It‘s a tough read but it being in verse gives it a different weight than a traditional memoir. I‘m hoping to find some interviews about why she chose to share her story in this style. It‘s very powerful and shows why Speak resonates with so many readers. #NFNov

I‘m definitely finishing this today. Unless cat naps are contagious. I‘ve never read a memoir in verse before. #NFNov #catsoflitsy

rubyslippersreads Catnaps are totally contagious! 😹💤💤💤 5y
MallenNC @rubyslippersreads The catnap was contagious but I still finished my book after the nap! My cats are professional sleepers. 5y

Read this on my flight back home today. Although it has some emotional parts it didn‘t resonate with me. I felt like some parts could have used more emotion. When a verse was emotional, it really grabbed you. I enjoyed overall, but I‘ve read many memoirs that leave a lasting impact. If you haven‘t read Speak I would do that first as there are several references to Speak in Shout. #memoir #poetry #travelreads

First book club meeting of the school year—this is the one a friend & I started to introduce parents to the YA & MG books that are popular in the library & that their kids are excited about. Tagged book was our summer read. I loved it but I‘ve already heard from one parent who hated everything about it. Every. Thing. Looking forward to an interesting discussion!

emtobiasz This is on the long list for the National Book Award (just announced today)! 5y
TracyReadsBooks @emtobiasz I hadn‘t heard that yet—thanks for telling me! I‘m not surprised. I think it‘s an excellent book. Have you read it? 5y
emtobiasz I have! I liked it quite a bit. I‘m not sure it would have spoken to me quite as well as a teen— I tended to avoid heavy books at that age. Still, it‘s an excellent memoir for teens who want to learn more about a favorite author and learn the back story behind her novels. 5y

I'm a big fan of Laurie Halse Anderson, so I had high expectations, but she didn't let me down. This memoir in verse was well worth the read, and she told so many fascinating and moving stories from her life. I intend to revisit this one, and I definitely recommend it.

ferskner I just finished this and immediately wanted to get the audiobook. So good. 5y
elizabethlk @ferskner do you know who reads the audiobook? I bet it's just as good as the visual read regardless. 5y
ferskner It looks like she narrates it herself, awesome! 5y

YUP.

julesG 😀😀 I like Danish, sounds very melodic to me. 6y
ferskner @julesG I adore it, but as a non-native learner, it definitely has its quirks. :) 6y

Laurie Halse Anderson‘s powerful memoir in verse form. Includes resources on sexual violence and mental health at the back of the book.

“this note about anatomy/ from me to you/is for the remembering/that after you speak/after you shout/your open mouth/will breathe in/the light for which/you‘ve hungered/ and your backbone/will unfurl until/you can again dance/to the beat/of your steadfast heart”
This book is powerful, especially the 2nd part. I like the poetry format, it makes it different than other books about trauma. My favorite book so far of the #BFC ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

My sister let me borrow this and said I have to read it. I‘ve read wintergirls, so I‘m sure it will be good.

I got a big shipment of books in today, which always makes for a happy day 😊😊😊

I ordered these months ago (our business office is terribly slow) so I had completely forgotten about some of them- happy surprises!
