The Rats in the Walls | H.P. Lovecraft
Pickpick

I‘m not normally a big fan of anything spooky or horror related (I prefer to be able to sleep at night) but this was a nice little story. The name of the cat made me super uncomfortable though and I'm thinking about reading up on the authors views. I mean there are plenty of good writers and I don't need to read a racist one. For now this is a good story and I loved the ending.

There are valid issues with Lovecraft's personal views which I will not reiterate - they are well documented. Consider reading the reprint from the 50s. Speaking only of the short story, it is typical of the mystery/horror he does so well. The atmosphere & sense of investigation are excellent. Parts remind me of Poe (an influence for HPL). The horror elements are truly ghastly, which is not something I seek out, but are essential for the genre.
