Very quick read. Very heavy read. Very important that you memorize this family tree before beginning! A lot of characters with very deep scars loved seeing them back on the same side of the creek. Also omg Vonetta had me sobbing and I was worried sick 🤕

Gone Crazy in Alabama is a HF book written by Rita Williams Garcia. It has won a Caldecott Medal and is the third book about sisters Delphine, Vonetta, and Fern. The sisters go visit their grandmother and great grandmother in Alabama. DrSpalding I am hoping you were a part of one crazy summer and were inspired to read the next two books in the series? If so, I am very impressed. Garcia is an excellent author of historical fiction. Great stories for literature circles that promote quality conversations. 7y

The third (and apparently final) book in the Gaither sisters‘ series. It‘s 1969, and the girls travel to Alabama to spend the summer with their grandmother and great-grandmother. Brilliantly explores race, family, forgiveness, and growing up. Highly recommend this series!

The third book in the Gaither #sisters series. Delphine, Vonetta, and Fern spend their summer #holiday in Alabama with their grandmother.
This is a great middle grade series that gives insight into African-American culture in the late1960s. And in general is a good coming-of-age story.

Smrloomis I love the name Delphine. Thanks for posting this! 8y
merelybookish @Smrloomis Delphine is a great name! In the first book, One Crazy Summer, they go visit their estranged mother. I think there is some discussion about how Delphine got her French name. 8y

"Cecile was a mountain. A crazy mother mountain."

Thoroughly enjoy this audiobook on the way to school/work. My son, not so much. He says all he's learned is people arguing all the time. I said that's family but they love each other. He didn't appreciate my commentary.

While I listen, he takes lines from the book and raps them. "Checking on Butter (the cow)" becomes, "checkin on Butta checkin on Butta checkin on Butta."
Good times.

I liked this entire trilogy! This is probably the slowest of all three and for that reason, I think I liked the first two a bit better. This volume rounded things out nicely without trying too hard. One is left feeling that the girls have a bright future but personally I don't feel like I have an urgent need to know what happens next like I did with The Graveyard Book.

Mehso-so

The first half kind of drags, but the second half picks up nicely and the conflict is more palpable. I should also mention that I didn't read the first two books in the series, so that might explain why I didn't totally love it.

TirzahPrice Oh you have to read One Crazy Summer! It's delightful and it sets up all of the characters perfectly. 9y

Ever start picking up a bunch of short books and/or kid lit because you're "next in line" for a library hold and it's taking FOREVER to come in? That's me right now. ?? But it led me to this book, so that's a good thing!

Chelsey Absolutely! I feel your pain! 9y
