The King's Justice
The King's Justice | E. M. Powell
3 posts | 3 read | 7 to read
A murder that defies logic--and a killer on the loose. England, 1176. Aelred Barling, esteemed clerk to the justices of King Henry II, is dispatched from the royal court with his young assistant, Hugo Stanton, to investigate a brutal murder in a village outside York. The case appears straightforward. A suspect is under lock and key in the local prison, and the angry villagers are demanding swift justice. But when more bodies are discovered, certainty turns to doubt--and amid the chaos it becomes clear that nobody is above suspicion. Facing growing unrest in the village and the fury of the lord of the manor, Stanton and Barling find themselves drawn into a mystery that defies logic, pursuing a killer who evades capture at every turn. Can they solve the riddle of who is preying upon the villagers? And can they do it without becoming prey themselves?

I was pleasantly surprised by this first-in-series mystery set in 12th-century England. I liked both mains (Hugo Stanton, a young messenger for Henry II‘s itinerant justices and Aelred Barling, a senior clerk to the justices). Lots of bodies mount up in a small village (very gruesomely done in!), and I did not guess the villain! Very cleverly plotted!
The second one is now on my TBR! 4/5⭐️

I picked this one up on a Kindle sale 9/2018 so thought I‘d finally get to it for my #doublespin pick. First in series.

@TheAromaofBooks Sarah, I‘m not sure if I‘m on your #doublespin list, but since this one is relatively short (

TheAromaofBooks No need to be on the “official“ #doublespin list - anyone is welcome to read both of the spin books!! I just only tag the people for the double if they specifically ask me to, as some people have said it genuinely stresses them out to be tagged for something they don't think they can accomplish. But do jump in any time!! Did you actually read this one, or are you just planning to do so? 5y
robinb @TheAromaofBooks totally understand because I know life gets in the way sometimes, and I‘m sure I won‘t be able to do the double every month. And yes, I am currently reading this one. 👍 5y
TheAromaofBooks haha I'm not even sure that *I* am going to be able to do the double this month!! 5y

I‘m not usually one for whodunnit‘s, especially not historical ones, but for some reason this appealed today. I was ready to bail after the first two chapters (bit graphic) but persevered and was pleasantly surprised. Stanton was a very likeable character and Barling grows on you. Well written and I did not guess at all who was the murderer!
