pickThe basis for the movie Stand by Me, this novella from the early 80s is an unusual quest narrative. Labor Day weekend four boys in Castle Rock set out to find the body of a boy their age that has been reported missing. King is great at writing coming of age stories & in this one there is a sense of darkness and impermanence simmering throughout. vivastory @Suet624 In general I think I prefer his novels. Having said that, there have been only a couple of his novels that have genuinely creeped me out (esp The Shining) but I find his short stories very effective at delivering shots of terror, as it were. I love this quote by him “I recognize terror as the finest emotion and so I will try to terrorize the reader. But if I find that I cannot terrify, I will try to horrify, and if I find that I cannot... 2y

KathyWheeler I am constantly amazed at Stephen King‘s ability to write a really good short story. He, himself, has said he has diarrhea of the mouth. He‘s such a wordy person, but short stories require the ability to deliver a complete story concisely. He can do that too. 2y
vivastory @KathyWheeler Night Shift is def. one of my favorite books by him. It's been awhile since I have read his short stories. I'm thinking of planning Bazaar of Bad Dreams as one of the next that I read by him. 2y

Branwen I LOVE this novella! 💕📚 I think my favorite of King's shorter works is Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption! There are a couple quotes from that that just make me sob every time I read them! 2y
vivastory @Branwen I placed a hold on Rita Hayworth etc literally as soon as I finished The Body. I have the Different Seasons collection but I am finding it easier to read the individual novellas. I also placed a hold on Christine. 2y
