Gifted Hands
Gifted Hands | Ben Carson, M.D.
17 posts | 20 read | 9 to read
In 1987, Dr. Benjamin Carson gained worldwide recognition for his part in the first successful separation of Siamese twins joined at the back of the head. The extremely complex and delicate operation, five months in the planning and twenty-two hours in the execution, involved a surgical plan that Carson helped initiate. Carson pioneered again in a rare procedure known as hemispherectomy, giving children without hope a second chance at life through a daring operation in which he literally removed one half of their brain. But such breakthroughs arent unusual for Ben Carson. Hes been beating the odds since he was a child. Raised in inner-city Detroit by a mother with a third grade education, Ben lacked motivation. He had terrible grades. And a pathological temper threatened to put him in jail. But Sonya Carson convinced her son that he could make something of his life, even though everything around him said otherwise. Trust in God, a relentless belief in his own capabilities, and sheer determination catapulted Ben from failing grades to the top of his class --- and beyond to a Yale scholarship . . . the University of Michigan Medical School . . . and finally, at age 33, the directorship of pediatric neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland. Today, Dr. Ben Carson holds twenty honorary doctorates and is the possessor of a long string of honors and awards, including the Horatio Alger Award, induction into the 'Great Blacks in Wax' Museum in Baltimore, Maryland, and an invitation as Keynote Speaker at the 1997 Presidents National Prayer Breakfast. Gifted Hands is the riveting story of one mans secret for success, tested against daunting odds and driven by an incredible mindset that dares to take risks. This inspiring autobiography takes you into the operating room to witness surgeries that made headlines around the world --- and into the private mind of a compassionate, God-fearing physician who lives to help others. Through it all shines a humility, quick wit, and down-to-earth style that make this book one you wont easily forget.

Whatever direction we choose, if we can realize that every hurdle we jump strengthens and prepares us for the next one, we‘re already on the way to success.

Chelseabillups30

However, if we choose to see the obstacles as hurdles, we can leap over them. Successful people don‘t have fewer problems. They have determined that nothing will stop them from going forward.

quote
Chelseabillups30

To THINK BIG and use our talents doesn‘t mean we won‘t have difficulties along the way.We will—we all do. How we view those problems determines how we end up. If we choose to see the obstacles in our path as barriers, we stop trying.

Well articulated, Dr. Carson 😊👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻!!!

BookishMarginalia I have so many issues with Ben Carson post-election cycle. I just do not respect him any more, given some of the things he has said and done lately. (And given enough situations... there are minorities who are smarter? Really? We need to be plentiful in order to find a smarter one? It's just a numbers game? 🤦🏻‍♀️) (edited) 8y

vivastory @BookishMarginalia @Nat_Reads He did equate political correctness with Nazism & he said Obamacare is the worst thing that has happened since slavery. 8y
Tcip The guy came out and straight up said that Trump would give him a position if he endorsed him... I mean come on. 8y
MrBook @BookishMarginalia @Nat_Reads @ApoptyGina69 @vivastory @McShelfington I completely understand your viewpoints & opinions 😊👍🏻. I strive to stay apolitical on Litsy. While he's become a political figure, this particular memoir doesn't directly get into political machinations, right? Rather focusing mostly on his family, faith, & career, and how he as a minority has dealt with life. Oprah, J Jackson, Ebony, B Walters, etc., give this high praise. 8y
MrBook @BookishMarginalia @Nat_Reads @ApoptyGina69 @vivastory @McShelfington @Tcip Your valid points bring up a recurring question in my bookclubs: can one separate a person from his/her work, like artists and writers? Also, in order to understand all individuals & their thoughts, it's important to read & learn about those we disagree with alongside those we agree with, right? ☺ 8y
Nat_Reads Agreed! This is a convo my husband and I constantly have--usually about Woody Allen and the like. We love the art: is it the man? Is it unethical to read/watch/enjoy? Also, totally agree with necessity of seeing multi points of view. 👏👏👏 (still have a twinge against B.C.--but allow you the point 😉) 8y
Tcip @MrBook I actually have no problem reading about things I disagree with. Example, I am going to read battle field earth, but that does not mean I am a Scientologist. I have read the Bible as an atheist but it does not make me a Christian. You can absolutely read books and works from those you disagree with if you put your self at a reasonable level of logic. It does not mean that you agree with them. If anything it helps to read them to disagree! 8y
Tcip @MrBook I just don't like the guy because you know... politics. 8y
MrBook @BookishMarginalia @Nat_Reads @ApoptyGina69 @vivastory @McShelfington @Tcip I know, the politics can be anxiety-ridden. I do appreciate you all tremendously *big hug*. You don't realize how much more fulfilling my life is with you all in it, and especially in making BookBabe happy. You're priceless to me for that ☺ *big group hug*. 8y
TheBookHippie @Tcip because politics 😂😂😂😂thanks for the giggle !!! Totally agree. ✌🏻 8y
Tcip @TheBookHippie :) your welcome. 8y
MrBook @TheBookHippie You too 😁☺👍🏻! (Per my last comment.) 8y
Tcip @MrBook hey man, hugs right back at ya! 8y
MrBook @Tcip @Nat_Reads Just so you know, I give lots of hugs. I'm that guy on the corner with a big sign that says "free hugs". Maybe it's the Italian in me, I don't know ?. 8y
MrBook @BookishMarginalia By the way, *love* that facepalm emoji!!! I can't find it anywhere among my emojis 😩😕. 8y
Tcip @MrBook as a fellow Italian, I can attest that yes, that is the reason why. 8y
MrBook @Tcip 😂👍🏻! @NCNY ☺👍🏻! 8y
BookishMarginalia The face palm emoji came with the latest iPhone update. It's such a useful emoji! (This update also brought a fingers-crossed emoji that was sorely needed!) 8y
minkyb So refreshing to read respectful, thoughtful comments. I find it hard not to just spew. I particularly like your comment @Tcip 8y

His story is inspirational. His journey to gaining the skills he had as a surgeon are admirable. But some parts of his life when you look them up are suspect. However it's a good read.
