I Will Never See the World Again
I Will Never See the World Again | Ahmet Altan
6 posts | 5 read | 15 to read
The destiny I put down in my novel has become mine. I am now under arrest like the hero I created years ago. I await the decision that will determine my future, just as he awaited his. I am unaware of my destiny, which has perhaps already been decided, just as he was unaware of his. I suffer the pathetic torment of profound helplessness, just as he did. Like a cursed oracle, I foresaw my future years ago not knowing that it was my own. Confined in a cell four metres long, imprisoned on absurd, Kafkaesque charges, novelist Ahmet Altan is one of many writers persecuted by Recep Tayyip Erdogan's oppressive regime. In this extraordinary memoir, written from his prison cell, Altan reflects upon his sentence, on a life whittled down to a courtyard covered by bars, and on the hope and solace a writer's mind can provide, even in the darkest places.

This was great- life affirming, witty, deep, ironic, and tragic. Who can deny a writer when they write “Because like all writers, I have magic. I can pass through your walls with ease.” I have trouble seeing how you can keep a good writer down. Shame on Erdogan.

Mr Altan uses his imagination and love of stories to weave an alternative reality for himself. It allows him to be free even while serving a life sentence in a Turkish prison for “subliminal messaging”. The only downside to this very beautifully written memoir is in its allowing us to forget the author is sitting in prison while we luxuriate in his talented attempt at mental freedom.

charl08 Hopefully the more who read it the more attention will be paid to his imprisonment. 5y
Nebklvr @charl08 I would like to believe it. Do they have a campaign going? 5y
Nebklvr @charl08 Thanks! I usually get these petitions but didn‘t get this one. 5y

I have read a few prison memoirs by writers jailed for political reasons, but this feels more painful as he is still in jail.

This book will come out in october. It is by a Turkish journalist who was given a life sentence after being convicted for sending “subliminal messages” during his tv program. Please get the word out. A life sentence!!

andrew61 I read endgame last year which was great so will definitely loook out fir this. It always saddens me how in some countries governments are so afraid of the power of the word that writers are imprisoned. Thanks for the reminder. 6y
Nebklvr @andrew61 It is unbelievable to me. I hope he will be released. 6y
