A surprisingly heavy read for such a short book. A modern parable and cautionary tale.

Tight, clipped, allegorical tale set in the aftermath of civil war in an unnamed country. Two men are sent to pave a road that will unite the nation. The two are polar opposites and represent two different approaches to both their job and to life itself. Eggers manages to build tension and reframe post colonial struggles but he does leave many a question unanswered. Nevertheless definitely a pick.

Attention: This is not a pick-me-up! (I knew this going in.)

My first Dave Eggers fiction book. I have read and loved Zaitoun and the Monk of Mokha. Really excited about this one.

Didn‘t really do anything for me. This was a short book I used to fill in time til my next hold comes in. Was neither really bad nor good.. it just was.. I do love Dion Graham‘s voice though. 😍

A quick read with an ending that caught me completely off guard. Really enjoyed this one!

I saw the ending coming a mile away but I think that was intentional. The road being built is smooth and perfectly straight and only the men building it are unable to see what happens at the end. Fueled by lies and propaganda, people will do almost anything. Quick read, very interesting, great writer.

Dave Eggers has written a new book. A highly political one. An important one. With a beautiful cover to boot.

After reading several examples of each, I've decided that I prefer Dave Eggers's nonfiction to his fiction. While I think his latest novel The Parade raises interesting issues, I didn't find it to be very compelling. The novel centers on Four, who has been contracted to pave a road through a country that is recovering for war. The goal: to be ready for a parade organized (and led) by its new leader. (continued in comments)

UnabridgedPod Four is forced to work with Nine, and Four is frustrated by Nine's lack of seriousness, by his indulgent behavior, and by his rule breaking. As the two are forced to work together, Four's ire pushes him to leave his control behind. The description frames the book as a sort of a parable, and I got that feeling, but ultimately, I just didn't find it to have the power of his books like Zeitoun and his memoir A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius. 6y

...but the ending still made my eyes roll. I thought the stripped down almost fabulist style worked and liked it better than other Eggers I‘ve read.

Good enough to keep listening... #audiobook

BookishTrish ...though I think Dion Graham has an amazing voice so that might be part of it. 6y
