Mehso-so

I recently picked this up as an Audible deal - it was fine but nothing I haven‘t read before. A daughter dealing with a narcissistic mother whose behavior is just awful but the daughter out of a sense of obligation and guilt allows her mother to rule her life from childhood through adulthood. The writing was good but the memoir seemed pointless. It was a short listen but not a book I‘d recommend.

Megabooks I get it. I‘m kind of done with the narcissistic parent books. Just finished this memoir and it exhausted me. 1y
Cinfhen I‘m actually interested in that memoir you just mentioned but I get what you mean about feeling exhausted- im kind of in a book slump every book feels more like a chore and less like a joy lately ☹️ @Megabooks 1y

I absolutely loved this memoir by Elissa Altman from Ballantine Books. It is absolutely fabulous and heartbreaking. Altman writes about her trying relationship with her mother. I honestly can't explain it in a concise way other than it is amazing. There are so many amazing quotes. I read it in one sitting.

Ugh, I love Elissa Altman so much. How does she take the most ordinary objects and turn them into the most important parts of the story? How does she create sympathy for someone who is, by all rights, a terrible person? In this memoir about her relationship with her mother, Elissa so perfectly describes the struggle of honoring the fifth commandment while trying preserving your own sanity. Out from Ballantine, August 2019 #netgalley
