The Things She's Seen
The Things She's Seen | Ezekiel Kwaymullina, Ambelin Kwaymullina
This brilliantly written thriller explores the lives--and deaths--of two girls, and what they will do to win justice. Sure to be one of the most talked-about books of the year! Nothing's been the same for Beth Teller since the day she died. Her dad is drowning in grief. He's also the only one who has been able to see and hear her since the accident. But now she's got a mystery to solve, a mystery that will hopefully remind her detective father that he is still alive, that there is a life after Beth that is still worth living. Who is Isobel Catching, and why is she able to see Beth, too? What is her connection to the crime Beth's father has been sent to investigate--a gruesome fire at a home for troubled youth that left an unidentifiable body behind? What happened to the people who haven't been seen since the fire? As Beth and her father unravel the mystery, they find a shocking and heartbreaking story lurking beneath the surface of a small town, and a friendship that lasts beyond one life and into another...

What a beautiful story. A meditation on life and death, trauma and healing, told partly in verse, this story really had the feeling of age-old wisdom and the oral tradition. Sad but hopeful, anchored in a way of viewing the world that encompasses more than what we can see. Not my usual thing at all, but I‘m so glad that I read it.

This was not at ALL what I was expecting, but that‘s not a bad thing. The crimes were very much offscreen, and the plot was actually much more about grief and coping. I also wasn‘t expecting the supernatural elements. It was beautifully written, though a little young in places. I read this for a book challenge for Aboriginal author.

Picked this at a swap. It is YA, a genre that is hit/miss for me. This book falls in the middle. Written from the perspective of 15-year-old Beth Teller, who died in an accident, it is also a murder mystery that needs to be solved by Beth‘s father, a detective. Beth‘s mother is Aboriginal and this novel discusses the Stolen Generations through Isobel Catching, a witness. Catching talks in poems.

Quick simple read. Not sure if it‘s written for children but the writing felt like it was for kids. The story was good because it was short I‘m glad they didn‘t stretch it.

#booked2019 #indigenousauthor

Time to start end of summer quarter reviews. Fingers crossed I get my books finished before the end of the month!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ A fantastic murder mystery ghost story, partly told in verse, that touches on the Stolen Generation of Australia's Aboriginal people. Author's note at the end gave great insights to the story telling techniques of the Aboriginal people.

BarbaraTheBibliophage Interesting pick! 👊🏻📚♥️ 5y

This was a wonderful own voices title from Indigenous Australian authors. Despite being less than 200 pages, it covered a lot of things about how Indigenous people were treated under colonization (which we did a lot of similar stuff in Canada). But I think most importantly, it touched on missing & murdered indigenous women AND the 60s Scoop while also lifting up the female characters without pretending racism and abuse is simple to get over & past

8little_paws Yes!! This book was pretty damn good. Great choice for #readharder #ownvoices in Oceania 5y
LeeRHarry My library here in Melbourne doesn‘t have this - looks like I should put it on their radar... 5y
SassenachTheBookWizard @LeeRHarry double check searching for just the author's names! I just saw somewhere that it was given a different title in North America (which is where I live) 5y

Books from Indigenous authors are still pretty rare so I was beyond curious to start this after it was blurbed at a library conference

I‘m giving this book a pick, because I think for the right audience, it is probably incredible. For me, who struggles with fantasy, I was mostly confused for the whole book, but it did sort of come together in the end. And it works for #readharderchallenge #ownvoicesoceania which is a really tough prompt.. so 🎉

readingjedi I love that cover! 5y

Completed Spring for #booked2019 with this one by an #indigenousauthor or two to be exact, as this YA novella was written by a brother and sister from the Palyku people of Western Australia.
Enjoyed all 6 books, but ‘Our Souls at Night‘ stood out. Loved it! 💕
Thanks ladies for these great prompts, that definitely pushed me outside my usual reads.....

JennyM Lovely selection! 6y

“Life doesn‘t move through time....Time moves through life”
This slim YA novel of grief and healing, is told both through a ‘Lovely Bones‘- esque mystery and with traditional Palyku storytelling. It‘s a tale full of strength, love and survival.
The writing is lovely, and this story, rooted in a history of stolen #Indigenous children and colonized homelands, is a heartbreaking one.
And don‘t miss the Author‘s note at the end... it‘s essential..💕

gibblr I want to read this one!!! 6y

"In telling this tale, we were informed by two sets of stories that are the inheritance of Aboriginal peoples. . . . Both sets of stories inform our existences and, thus, our storytelling. The ancient tales of Aboriginal nations of Australia tell of an animate world, where everything lives" ("Author's Note," Ambelin and Ezekiel Kwaymullina).⠀

I had an urge to quote the entire Author's Note here but did restrain myself. (continued in comments)

UnabridgedPod I encourage you, though, to pick up this book immediately and not to skip the Note, which offers an enriching perspective on the stories behind the novel. It centers on two narrators: teenage Beth accompanies her father on his investigation into a fire that resulted in one man's death. The only catch? Beth is dead. Her recent death has left her single father alone and nearly unable to function. ⬇️ 6y
UnabridgedPod The second narrator is Catching, one of the children who survived the fire and who shares her tale, which is rife with Aboriginal stories, in verse. As the two narratives twine together, the truth behind the mysterious death becomes distressingly clear. This gorgeous, haunting, hopeful novel is a must read! 6y
