“The first of the two great dog laws: smell everything and learn?”
The cover is simple and the illustrations show the kind nature of Sparky. He appears curious and sweet as well as a bit stubborn. This is an intriguing introduction to the story.

This story is about a pet dog named Spunky who is frustrated he can‘t communicate with his family. The family assumes he wants a friend so they get a cat! This is not what he wanted at all, but through this experience he learns the new benefits and accomplishments he has when spending time with her. This is an encouraging book for children because it gives a new perspective to something you may not originally like.
“My eyes were starting to freeze and the turning cold dark shot through me!”
This is a great early chapter book for kids and it‘s fun seeing the world through the eyes of a dog.
This book is about Spunky the dog and experiencing his day to day life through his eyes. This is a fun and clever book that I think kids would be so interested in. The illustrations are also very simple, but still great for kids
There are also some adorable pictures in this book that do an excellent job at expressing the feelings of the animals.
This author uses animals with human-like characteristics and feelings. The animals are put into tricky situations and learn to cope with one another. This could be a fun read for children who need some assistance in dealing with changes and coping with new “people.”
I pushed myself between them and the cage so they had to stand back a little. I tried to reason with them. I tried to warn them.
This is a funny and insightful story that even includes some of the authors cute drawings.

Funny chapter book from a dogs point of view. Shows how even though you may not like someone at first, once you get to know people you can have more in common than you originally thought
2011, contemporary literature. Story about Spunky the dog who has two owners and a great life. His owners end up adopting a snobby cat which Spunky is not happy about. Story about making friends, despite first impressions.
-contemporary realistic fiction
This would be a great book for a second grader. Easy read and it involves a dog that seems to be “talking” but his owners only hear “yerf”
This little piece is showing how at first something that was so unbearable and a disgrace turned to be a wonderful bonding experience and create a strong loving relationship!
I love the use of illustrations in a book like this because it allows children to fully understand the emotions and setting of the book.
Published in 2011 this realistic fiction book uses animal characters with human like feelings to portray change and feelings of dislike towards unfamiliar things in life. When children are faced with meeting new people and/or getting a new sibling, they may have a hard time adjusting. A story like this can help a child cope and learn to find the good in the situation!
