Alone on the Wall (Expanded)
Alone on the Wall (Expanded) | Alex Honnold
9 posts | 11 read | 1 to read
On June 3rd, 2017, Alex Honnold became the first person to free solo Yosemite's El Capitan--to scale the wall without rope, a partner, or any protective gear--completing what was described as "the greatest feat of pure rock climbing in the history of the sport" (National Geographic) and "one of the great athletic feats of any kind, ever" (New York Times). Already one of the most famous adventure athletes in the world, Honnold has now been hailed as "the greatest climber of all time" (Vertical magazine).Alone on the Wall recounts the most astonishing achievements of Honnold's extraordinary life and career, brimming with lessons on living fearlessly, taking risks, and maintaining focus even in the face of extreme danger. Now Honnold tells, for the first time and in his own words, the story of his 3 hours and 56 minutes on the sheer face of El Cap, which Outside called "the moon landing of free soloing...a generation-defining climb. Bad ass and beyond words...one of the pinnacle sporting moments of all time."

Pickpick

After visiting Yosemite a year ago, and seeing El Capitan, @AmyK1 and I watched the documentary "Free Solo" on the plane on the way home. Probably the most impressive athletic feat in history, Alex Honnold, climbed the cliff with no ropes, no aid tools. This book is a history of Honnold's career in rock climbing, now expanded to include his account of the Freerider solo. Honnold is a good writer, but a climbing glossary would be beneficial.

Bigcountry15 Not only is Alex an impressive athlete, but he also uses his wealth and fame to make a difference in the world through his Honnold Foundation. Follow him on Instagram for more information and some awesome photos from his climbs. 4y

This would probably be great for anyone who is interested in climbing. It has a lot of detailed descriptions of Alex‘s climbs that I found extremely boring. I watched Free Solo on the way home from Yosemite last year and that was excellent. What he does is amazing. I just don‘t really need a book about it. But it was a gift from my sweet SIL after we told her about our trip.

Book 12 for #bookspinbonanza @TheAromaofBooks

TheAromaofBooks My brother lives in Seattle and has gotten way into climbing over the last few years, so I imagine this book is a lot like him telling me about his climbs... not quite as exciting as actually being there 😂 5y
AmyK1 @TheAromaofBooks sounds about right! 😂 5y

1. Yes. Views change when I know more about a person and how they got to where they are.
2. A Long Way Gone
3. Tagged. It‘s book 12 for #bookspinbonanza and I‘ll be reading it sometime this week. It was a Christmas gift from my SIL.

If you follow Alex Honnold‘s career at all, I don‘t see how you could find this book interesting. It‘s essentially a memoir of all the major things Alex has done, but you probably already know much of it from YouTube, Reel Rock, climbing magazines etc.

Things that seem prohibitively hard when you look at the scale of the total problem, but more reasonable once you start to chip away at it.

"...just because something is precious doesn't mean you have to baby it. Just like suburbanites who have shiny new SUV that they are afraid to dent. What's the point in having an amazing vehicle if you're afraid to drive it?

I'm trying to take my vehicle to new and interesting places. And I try my very best not to crash, but at least I take it out."

Perfect evening! Mindblowing book paired with self-made Tiramisù. Well deserved after 47km of cycling and 3 hours climbing :)
