It was 11pm when I checked my email for the last time and turned off my phone for what I hoped would be forever. No running water, no car, no electricity or any of the things it powers: the internet, phone, washing machine, radio or light bulb. Just a wooden cabin, on a smallholding, by the edge of a stand of spruce. In this honest and lyrical account of a remarkable life without modern technology, Mark Boyle explores the hard won joys of building a home with his bare hands, learning to make fire, collecting water from the spring, foraging and fishing. What he finds is an elemental life, one governed by the rhythms of the sun and seasons, where life and death dance in a primal landscape of blood, wood, muck, water, and fire much the same life we have lived for most of our time on earth. Revisiting it brings a deep insight into what it means to be human at a time when the boundaries between man and machine are blurring.

This scrapes a So-So ONLY because it's Friday & I'm marginally less grumpy than normal. I didn't warm to it as it really wasn't what I was expecting - lots of the author's previous life (not interested) combined with a series of vague unconnected vignettes & the author's slightly tortured navel gazing. Worthy, but tedious when what I really wanted to know was .... HOW IS IT POSSIBLE TO LIVE WITHOUT AMAZON PRIME AND WORDLE??!! HOW???!!!

Sace Honestly? It‘s not 🤣 I speak from my own experience. Spelling Bee is my downfall. 2mo
ImperfectCJ Prime I'm fine without (quit it 5 years ago when they kept sending me knockoffs after I'd done a ton of research choosing a specific brand), but Wordle? Can't imagine my day without it anymore! 2mo

I can‘t imagine living the way Mark did for an entire year. No electricity, no technology, but a whole lot of learning and discovery. More importantly, Mark discovers himself and realizes just how much technology has damaged us as humans. Phones, tablets, social media, etc., and I know I could live without this form of technology as well.

My rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Tamra It takes me a few days to adapt during our camping vacations and then it‘s a relief to live without it. Unfortunately, the demands of real life” don‘t allow me to make it permanent. However, I could definitely reduce my use of technology outside of work. 2y
TheQuietQuill It‘s definitely an adjustment, and I find myself so much more relaxed without technology. It‘s like our souls were meant for that, and I feel more at peace as well. And same, there are some times I won‘t look at my phone for days at a time and then I‘ll look and have so many messages which completely stress me out. @Tamra (edited) 2y

Has really made me rethink consumerism and modern technology - has inspired me to take care of nature more and think more carefully about every purchase. The book was more a collection of the authors musings which made for a good audiobook to pick up and put down - well read by the author in his lovely Irish accent.
