MFA vs NYC
MFA vs NYC: The Two Cultures of American Fiction | Chad Harbach
7 posts | 3 read | 4 to read
Writers writebut what do they do for money? In a widely read essay entitled "MFA vs NYC," bestselling novelist Chad Harbach (The Art of Fielding) argued that the American literary scene has split into two cultures: New York publishing versus university MFA programs. This book brings together established writers, MFA professors and students, and New York editors, publicists, and agents to talk about these overlapping worlds, and the ways writers make (or fail to make) a living within them. Should you seek an advanced degree, or will workshops smother your style? Do you need to move to New York, or will the high cost of living undo you? What's worsehaving a day job or not having health insurance? How do agents decide what to represent? Will Big Publishing survive? How has the rise of MFA programs affected American fiction? The expert contributors, including George Saunders, Elif Batuman, and Fredric Jameson, consider all these questions and more, with humor and rigor. MFA vs NYC is a must-read for aspiring writers, and for anyone interested in the present and future of American letters.

This is a solid collection of essays about the state of 21st century American fiction, the pros and cons of academic studies in creative writing, the grim reality of the publishing business.

I‘d have still gotten my MFA even if I‘d read this before I applied, but I still kinda wish I‘d read it then.

Also, the Gordon Lish essay is downright skeevy and gross, and I‘d love to read a post-#MeToo take on it.

Interesting. Do you think people on the whole read more shallowly now than they did 20 years ago?

wanderinglynn Yes, because of e-reading. Studies have shown that people comprehend less when reading electronic publications (including newspapers & magazines). I know that if I really want to “get” something, I have to print it out or find a print version. 6y
REPollock @wanderinglynn good point. I print stuff out to really concentrate on it too. 6y
AJones Most definitely! I see it all the time; especially at work (I‘m a teacher). Students just skim for the key details. Most of them have no patience or much less take the necessary time to actually read. They want it right then, plain an simple. It‘s truly sad. This is why we need to promote literature. 💙📚 6y

This is why I love George Saunders. Wouldn't it be awesome to have him as your teacher?

TFW you finally decide to go for it and apply to an MFA program in writing. The deadline's not for another two months, but I am already freaking out. But if it wasn't for Litsy and all you great people, I don't think I would have reawakened my love of stories, of books, of writing. So thank you, and yes, you can #blameitonlitsy
