This is a strange little gem of a book. Written in language meant for children's fairytales, it deals with adult, philosophical topics, like a woman‘s place in society, organized religion, and differences in points of views. From our MC's POV, a hero is just another word for murderer—she was raised by bears and dragons after all, so heroes are her enemies. God-touched, wandering, unconventional, she walks an open road and “travels light”.

This is a strange little book. I think I would have really liked it if I'd discovered it as a kid. I don't think I could recommend it wholeheartedly to kids now because there are some really problematic moments in it, particularly around the treatment of slavery and enslaved people. But with that major caveat, I did enjoy it overall, and I see why it was recommended in This Is How You Lose the Time War.

Welp, chapter one is off to a bad start, with this old racist trope about blonde hair and blue eyes being "the only right colour." Ugh.

This book has been on my to-read list for a while, but I bumped it up to the top after it got mentioned in This Is How You Lose the Time War. Got it via ILL from a local university library, which for some reason has a UK edition. There's a price tag for £4.50 on the back.

The introduction failed to make the book sound all that great to me, but hopefully it gets better from here.

such a great little book. the way it defies "traditional" fantasy tropes makes it seem modern but the prose style makes it seem older, and it's a great mix. highly recommended if you want a short read about a princess raised by bears and dragons, who goes out into the world specifically to frustrate and oppose prince-valiant-style fantasy heroes

Started reading this with my almost 4-year-old (!!!!) daughter and it is magical and sweet.
