Serafina is growing up in a small village outside of Port-au-Prince, Haiti. More than anything she wants to go to school so she can become a doctor and help her community. But there's no money for school, no time for school, and her Manman is anxious with other worries.
Told in verse, this is a beautiful story of strength and resilience, and an important story to build empathy for upper grade schoolers and middle schoolers.

A heart wrenching book about a young girl's life in Haiti told in verse. Just beautiful.
Sometimes you find infant and pregnancy loss understanding in the most unlikely places, like a book for middle graders.
Loved this beautifully written book about a young girl's wish to become a doctor to help her family and the people from her village. Written in poetry, the story pulls at your heartstrings and fills you with hope.
