One of Faulkner's comic masterpieces, The Reivers is a picaresque that tells of three unlikely car thieves from rural Mississippi. Eleven-year-old Lucius Priest is persuaded by Boon Hogganbeck, one of his family's retainers, to steal his grandfather's car and make a trip to Memphis. The Priests' black coachman, Ned McCaslin, stows away, and the three of them are off on a heroic odyssey, for which they are all ill-equipped, that ends at Miss Reba's bordello in Memphis. From there a series of wild misadventures ensues--involving horse smuggling, trainmen, sheriffs' deputies, and jail.

And when young Richie Reade stands up to the mighty Armstrong clan, killing two of their own, his life will change forever. The book isn't on Litsy, so I linked to a history book about reivers(raiders along the Scottish/English border).

In 1961, Wm. Faulkner visited Venezuela in honor of its sesquicentennial of independence. He was sent there as a cultural ambassador of the US. As reported on the UVA library's website, Faulkner wrote, "If possible, I would prefer to avoid being asked for autographs by Anglo-Americans, since the addition of my signature to a book is part of my daily bread. I intend, and want, to sign any & all from Venezuelans..."
