Under Pressure
Under Pressure: Ending the Epidemic of Stress and Anxiety in Girls | Lisa Damour
5 posts | 6 read | 16 to read
An urgently needed guide to the alarming rate of psychological stress experienced by girls from age ten through college, from the New York Times bestselling author of Untangled. Though anxiety has risen among young people overall, recent research studies confirm that it has skyrocketed in girls. According to research studies, since the turn of the millennium, a staggering 31% of girls reported feeling anxious, compared to 12% recorded in the 1980s. In a similar vein, the number of girls found to be emotionally fragile jumped 55% from 2009 to 2014 while the comparable number for adolescent boys remained unchanged over the same time period. As a clinical psychologist who specializes in girls, Lisa Damour, Ph. D., has watched this rising tide of anxiety in her own research, private practice, and in the all-girls' school where she consults, and knew this had to be the topic of her next book. In the same engaging, anecdotal style and reassuring tone that won over thousands of readers of her first book, Untangled, Damour starts by examining the science of stress and anxiety, then turns to the many facets of girls' lives where stress hits them hard: the parental pressures they face at home, pressures at school, social anxiety among other girls and among boys, and on social media. As readers move through layers of girls' lives, they learn the critical steps we can take to shield our daughters from the toxic stress that our culture--including we, their parents--subjects them to. Readers who know Damour from Untangled or the New York Times or from her regular appearances on CBS News will be drawn to this important new contribution to understanding and supporting today's girls.

This wasn‘t as good as Untangled. My girl is approaching 11, and while she doesn‘t necessarily have unhealthy anxiety, she definitely has a personality that lends to stress. I feel like this book sort of diminished the levels of stress and anxiety many girls deal with. A lot of stress is good and helps us grow stronger.. which sure.. but it can also feel really bad! Nonetheless there were good bits here that I will definitely keep in mind.

This book had plenty of strategies for helping pre-teen and teenage girls deal with stress. It‘s something I‘ll keep in mind as my daughter grows, and for myself since no one was talking about this kind of stuff when I was a kid.

Note: hopefully now that I am done with this book I can get the song out of my head.

I read this for a discussion with colleagues at the school where I work. I don‘t think I would have picked it up on my own, but I am glad I read it. The author‘s research and clinical observations inform her ideas about teenage girls and stress. Importantly, I did NOT feel like her points were confirming what I already ”knew.” I felt like she was suggesting fresh approaches and forcing me to see the topic in a new light, backed up by research.

MizzGraham Great review 👍🏼📚 I need to check this one out! 5y

This was a good basic introduction into tween and teen stress and anxiety with anecdotal suggestions on how to help your daughter deal. Nothing too ground breaking but there were definitely some relatable points and a good list of resources in the back of the book.

The author‘s earlier book, Untangled, was fabulous. This latest has good pointers for parents of teen girls dealing with stress and anxiety, but unlike the earlier book, less here is new. #netgalley

LiteraryinPA I recently saw the author speak at a conference. She was so engaging! I‘m planning to read her new book, but it‘s helpful to hear your feedback. 6y
