Wideacre
Wideacre: A Novel | Philippa Gregory
From #1 New York Times bestselling author Philippa Gregory comes the stunning first novel of a thrilling trilogy about the Lacey family, and the captivating woman at the heart of a power-hungry estate willing to go to any means to protect her family name. Beatrice Lacey, as strong-minded as she is beautiful, refuses to conform to the social customs of her time. Destined to lose her heritage and beloved Wideacre estate once she is wed, Beatrice will use any means necessary to protect her ancestral name. Seduction, betrayal, even murderBeatrices passion is without apology or conscience. She is a Lacey of Wideacre, her father warns, and whatever she does, however she behaves, will always be fitting. Yet even as Beatrices scheming seems about to yield her dream, she is haunted by the one living person who knows the extent of her plans...and her capacity for evil. Sumptuously set in Georgian England from the queen of royal fiction (USA TODAY), Wideacre is intensely gripping, rich in texture, and full of color and authenticity. It is a saga as irresistible in its singular magic as its heroine.

I enjoyed this novel!! I see echoes of Scarlett O‘Hara in the main character (although Scarlett was never such a psychopath as Beatrice of Wideacre), but I have a real soft spot for unlikeable female characters, so it‘s definitely not for everyone. Still, to me it was a classic and enjoyable bodice ripper, best paired with 🍷and your favorite 📳. 😉🤣

Having arranged “accidents” to dispose of both her father and lover, Beatrice The Wicked Slut has set her sights on her brother… and I‘m only on chapter 6, y‘all. I am honestly unsure where else this can possibly go, but looking forward to finding out! 😅

I am out of Audible credits, this entire trilogy is free right now with my membership and it is Springtime in the Rocky Mountains, which means I have a lot of walking to do!! I must say I have rarely giggled so much, this is obviously a novel not to be taken as seriously as some seem to have done. Yes, the main character is a wicked slut…. I love her and I can‘t wait to hear all she gets up to 🤭😂

CatLass007 Fun! I have an Audible subscription. I definitely will check into this series. 8mo

I am posting one book per day from my extensive to-be-read collection. No description and providing no reason for wanting to read it, I just do. Some will be old, some will be new. Don‘t judge me - I have a lot of books. Join the fun if you want.

Three by Sleeping at Last

Trilogies!

This one. The Wideacre Trilogy by Philippa Gregory is one I have not yet read. I‘m excited to read it as she is definitely a favorite and auto buy author. The first book in this trilogy, Wideacre, is the first book Gregory ever wrote and I‘m excited to see what I think.

Birdsong28 I read this a couple of years ago even though I have read most of her other work as she is my favourite author as well. All I will say is keep with it as it is very good but if you have read her other stuff then you can tell that it is her first works as it isn't as refined as them. Also the book was third book I found was weird as it could be read as a stand alone as it only has loose ties to the other books. Enjoy and lt 4y
Birdsong28 Enjoy it and let me know what you think! 📚 📖 4y
BacklistReader @Birdsong28 thanks for the heads up. I actually don‘t think I knew it was her debut when I bought them. I will definitely share my thoughts. 4y

Hate this book with a passion. I only finished it because of some misguided loyalty I feel toward Ms. Gregory. #worstreads

Texreader I do not like her writing style at all. 6y

EnchantedRoses You have no shelf control 😂 7y
LuluTheBookBug True statement 7y
EnchantedRoses Believe me, I‘m not judging. I have an order coming in from Amazon when I said I was going to the library for the books on my list... (edited) 7y
LuluTheBookBug I love it!!! 7y
EnchantedRoses I always think I‘ll be good and support the local libraries, and save some money... but then I get greedy and want these books for myself. 🤷🏻‍♀️ 7y

I'm so gutted about this book. I really had high hopes as I usually love a bit of Philippa Gregory. The characters are so unlikeable and the storylines are so far fetched, they're unbelievable. I persevered to the end as I thought that there might be some consolation at the end. Nope. Boo :(

I am a fan of Philippa Gregory but not this book. The characters are devastatingly unlikeable.

I don't #dnf books, I muscle through, but there are two which I started and didn't finish. Wideacre I just couldn't bring myself to keep reading it; it was disturbing. David Copperfield was a book I started at the wrong time, but I love Dickens and would like to finish this book. #readjanuary

DzdnDstrctd I couldn't handle Wideacre, either. I love Philippa Gregory but she went around the bend a bit for this one. 8y
CrowCAH @Kristin this was my first foray into Philippa Gregory's work (perhaps I should try another) and from what I discussed with my sister, who loves her Tudor series, she agrees. My sister was actually the one to tell me it's ok to DNF it! 8y
B.Reader I finished Wideacre and, about ten years later, it remains one of the most disturbing reads I've ever encountered. It is a great idea to DNF it. 8y
CrowCAH @B.Reader thanks for giving me the "ok" to DNF it lol; I just thought my sensibilities were too sensitive for the subject matter ? 8y
DzdnDstrctd Her Tudor series is great! The Other Boleyn Girl is the book that started my obsession with the Tudors and now I read anything I can get my hands on, fiction or non. 8y

Only books I own with #dressesoncovers are the Wideacre trilogy. Has anyone read these? #readjanuary

Reecaspieces I love Philippa Gregory but I could not get into these. Her characters are...the only word I can come up with are stupid.... 8y
DaniRa Thank you @Reecaspieces I have had these for years now thinking I'll eventually get around to them because I loved her other books but I worry about them being bad because of reviews I've read. At least the covers are pretty 😜 8y
ReadThisBookYall I have to say I hated these books & I love Philippa Gregory. I've read & enjoyed all of her other books, but the main character in this trilogy is loathsome. I can't believe I read all 3 thinking, "it must get better." It didn't. 8y
DaniRa @ReadThisBookYall thank you for the insight! This will probably be one of those books I pass on without reading since I keep seeing reviews like this. 😌 8y

I only could get through about 75 pages before I couldn't take it anymore. The main character behaved towards her brother abominably and I didn't want to suffer through their relationship. The sad thing was I really wanted to like this book, it sounded like a me story. I didn't physically throw this book across the room, but close to it. #photoadaynov16

Mehso-so

An English women with a strong commitment to the land she grew up on with no way of ever owning it due to arcane inheritance law. The lengths she goes to to keep the land include manipulation, deceit, incest and child abandonment. Not a nice women but certainly single minded.
