For readers of The Twelve Tribes of Hattie and The Turner House, an intimately told story about a woman living by her own rules and the rural community that struggles to understand her. Azalea "Knot" Centre is determined to live life as she pleases. Let the people of West Mills say what they will; the neighbors' gossip won't keep Knot from what she loves best: cheap moonshine, nineteenth-century literature, and the company of men. And yet, Knot is starting to learn that her freedom comes at a high price. Alone in her one-room shack, ostracized from her relatives and cut off from her hometown, Knot turns to her neighbor, Otis Lee Loving, in search of some semblance of family and home. Otis Lee is eager to help. A lifelong fixer, Otis Lee is determined to steer his friends and family away from decisions that will cause them heartache and ridicule. After his failed attempt as a teenager to help his older sister, Otis Lee discovers a possible path to redemption in the chaos Knot brings to his doorstep. But while he's busy trying to fix Knot's life, Otis Lee finds himself powerless to repair the many troubles within his own family, as the long-buried secrets of his troubled past begin to come to light. Set in an African American community in rural North Carolina from 1941 to 1987, In West Mills is a magnificent, big-hearted small-town story about family, friendship, storytelling, and the redemptive power of love.

Unlike the 2020 Center for Fiction First Novel prize winner, this 2019 winner was just what I wanted. An independent woman who seemingly needs no help and a community of friends and neighbors who watch over her. She‘s cranky, an alcoholic, and completely unapologetic. This is a multi-generational story and I loved each of the characters.

batsy This was on my radar when it came out but as usual I'd forgotten. Thanks for the reminder! 2y

There has been a lot of talk on BookTok lately about how people love Gay books but only if they are written by women. And about how Gay men are really not getting their due.
So on this last day of pride for my #pridebookrec I am going to share some of my favorite Gay authors.
If you have any books to add to this please do!

ChaoticMissAdventures Oscar Wilde. Classic. Drama. Perfection. All of his work is magnificent, but if you have not read this classic get on it. The creativity and craft is outstanding in 2y
ChaoticMissAdventures I read this as an ARC and was blown away. It is gritty, and real. Following a woman in a small southern town, who is an alcoholic, and who's neighbors are trying their best to help her, when she clearly does not want help. Moving and wonderfully written please read 2y
ChaoticMissAdventures I think this is the only non-fiction I have for this post. Well written, raw and filled with information and hope for young Queer Black boys and men. This books is good for everyone to read, and it is nice to have a fully loving and supporting family featured in a queer essay collection. Please read 2y

ChaoticMissAdventures Beautifully crafted. A rich world. Xochital is the storyteller of her village she takes on this role at 8. This is an imaginative fantasy world. A bit of a chunker so if you are looking to really immerse yourself into a world I suggest 2y
ChaoticMissAdventures “Beautifully captivating“ has been used many times to describe this YA book about 2 boys who meet and fall in love over a summer at the local pool. They are the most amazing heartwarming characters and I love their journey. Please read 2y
ChaoticMissAdventures “It was beauty, I learned, that we risked ourselves for.“ Dark and Gritty, the story of a gay son and his relationship with his illiterate mother. He tackles a range of issues from opioid addiction to his mothers literacy, to moments of intimacy with his boyfriends, incredibly well written, and heart breaking. 2y
ChaoticMissAdventures Might I suggest everything Baldwin has ever written. He is honestly close to god status for me. I admire everything about him, from his overcoming of his extreme religious upbringing, to his adventurous and rebellious spirit, and his incredible writing ability is just the cherry on top. You cannot go wrong with any of his novels, but if you want something to really ponder, reflect on, and transport you to Paris pick up 2y
ChaoticMissAdventures Another chunker, this imaginative and creatively woven epic historical story about a Parisian opera singer in high society will transport you. It is a bit dense, but the writing is masterful in the gorgeous 2y
ChaoticMissAdventures “A novel about the forbidden union between two enslaved young men on a Deep South plantation“ This is a gorgeous, heartbreaking, and somehow lovely love story. Rich story telling with complex characters - even the side characters are richly drawn, This is a need to read - 2y
ChaoticMissAdventures I have a slight crush on Brandon Taylor, so I may be bias, but I loved Real Life. Set in a college town, following a Black gay student who often feels lost and lonely, he is searching for human connection. Gorgeously written, and one of those rare books where when you put it down you want to go straight back, just to hang out with the characters. Please read - 2y
RaeLovesToRead This was a moving romance. 2y
Kimberlone While the author‘s gender doesn‘t really matter for me choosing a book to read, I‘ve definitely noticed this as a trend, especially in the romance genre 2y
BarbaraBB I loved Real Life too. I am looking forward to 2y
ChaoticMissAdventures @BarbaraBB I really enjoyed Filthy Animals! It is short stories, but still with Taylor's awesome writing. 2y
ChaoticMissAdventures @Kimberlone yes! Looking more into my own reading I noticed the books I have been reading that are M/M mostly are written by straight women. It seems to be really prevalent in YA and romance. 2y
BarbaraBB Good to know, thanks 👌🏽 2y

Don't you love it when a novel comes to you with no preconceptions, seemingly out of nowhere? I had never heard of this book, but was drawn to the cover in the library, and I loved it. Azalea 'Knot' Centre is a character like no other, complex and fiercely independent, and the community of found family and friends in West Mills will fill your heart. They love each other, and get frustrated with each other in the ways that only true family can.

Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks Beautiful cover 💛 3y

This is the debut novel from De‘Shawn Winslow. He introduced us to the protagonist of the story Azalea Centre alias Knot. She‘s a strong willed independent woman who‘d does as she pleases and answer a smart Alec answer for everything. You‘ll soon learn how her refusal to bend to everybody else‘s expectations makes her and everyone around her look at family and friendship in a different way. Excellent writing and pacing!

#2019Book64
Books that cover multiple decades and family generations are my jam and I loved watching these characters grow. I only wish the novel was longer, because I wasn‘t ready to leave West Mills just yet.

Mehso-so

I didn't know what to expect when starting this one, but I enjoyed it.

I would have liked a bit more understanding of many character motives than we were given though.

This book is a phenomenal debut. It is small and subtle, but will personally sit with me quite a while. The story takes place in an African America community in North Carolina between the 1940‘s and 1980‘s. The main character “Knot” was way ahead of her time, never felt she had to follow the norms. It was so much fun to follow this very independent w0man who would not care about following any of the norms. Very good read.
